It is very normal for the majority of our bucks to carry their racks way into February, but I was a little surprised that I saw three different bucks still carrying their hardened antlers while scouting a new property yesterday afternoon. I haven't been out much the last 30-45 days so I don't know if these were the exception for this time of year or the "norm". Anybody else still seeing deer with headgear?
There has been more than a few sightings around my area still packing, including trail cam pics. We have some cams out and are due to check them soon, so we shall see.
My buddy saw a great buck last week with both sides still intact I'm planning on going to my place in Oklahoma on Sunday to do a little shed hunting. I'd love to here from the Ok boys on this one......
Went shed hunting for several hours just a few days ago and seen 2 bucks still packing bone on their heads on the way home !
Up until a week ago we had two small bucks that still had both their antlers, ut have since shed. I know they didn't drop them very far away so i'm looking forward to finding their sheds.
On the way to OKC about a week and a half ago I saw a decent six still carrying. But my cousin found three sheds last week in his food plot her in the central part of state, so I think they are dropping here.
I am sure there are a few still out there holding on, but I think the vast majority of them have dropped by now.
We saw 7 bucks carrying Saturday. There was another one still carrying one side. He has been carrying the one side for at least a week as we saw him the Saturday before with one side. We know it is the same buck. He is a very nice buck and it seems a little strange he would carry it that long. We've seen a few little guys carrying one side for 3 weeks or so in the past but never an older buck more then a few days. Will be interesting to see if he is still carrying the one side this weekend. Tim
I have only come across does lately when I'm out shed hunting. but up until sunday, I hadn't found a fresh shed from this year yet. So I'm assuming that they are just starting to fall off way up here. I'll be checking my camera soon to see what it shows me.
Saw a 100" 4x4 a few days ago. With the weather we've had for the last three monthes I would've expected most of our bone to be on the ground by now, but you just never know. Two years ago while we were turkey hunting in mid/late-April we shot footage of two young bucks that were still carrying their previous years racks, and shortly there after videoed two bucks that had already started growing their new racks.
I have seen a couple around here but that was the first day or two of March. However a friend / neighbor has pened up deer a few years ago (he sold them to someone else and Moved to FLA) but they would keep there head gear til middle of March and 1 buck kept his head gear until / around 20th or 21st of march then the first part of April you could see the velet it would be poking up thru again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have not seen a buck with antlers in 2 months. 3.5 year olds were dropping here on my trail cams before Christmas.
I can believe It. 3 years ago I heard a buck grunting the 2nd week of December. I couldn't find him anywhere, all I could see was 2 adult deer north of me heading my way. Once they got with In 20 yards of me I could see that the 2nd deer was Indeed a buck that had shed his antlers. He was following very close behind the doe grunting. I'd bet he was at least a 3.5 year old, probably a 4.5 being he was at least 190lbs dressed. I pulled all of my trail cams 3 weeks ago being I wasn't getting any good bucks on my cams but my brother put one of my trail cams out again last week and got a picture of a 1.5 year old still carrying one side, the other side had fell off.
