Those are awesome pics! I bet the land up there is pretty awesome for waterfowl hunting. There are a lot of flat, low fields and ponds.
I have some friends that live up in Muncie, I may put a call out to them...

Stillwater Marsh near Lake Monroe isn't too far of a drive for you.

Those are some epic pics DEC! Anybody have any tips on some good gear? I'm looking for a nice pair of chest waders that wont break the bank, also how do you know what size to get? Is it just your boot size? Thanks a lot guys!

I would suggest going to a store and trying on waders to get a feel for your size, then shop online to find the best deal.

Drake Waterfowl makes very good waterfowl clothing. On the spendy side but worth it if you're going to be in them a lot. I don't water hunt much anymore but I have a pair of Winchester waders that got me through many seasons and were only $100 ish brand new. They go by boot size but like mentioned, try a few pairs out. If you're just getting into the game, water hunting ducks is going to be your cheapest investment and in my opinion easier. That is how I started out but after a couple seasons, invested in gear to use solely on geese and on land. I will hunt geese out of a layout overlooking full bodies any day on water shooting ducks. Just my opinion though!

Rogers Sporting Goods is a very good site buying new but I would recommend buying used. You can find just about the same quality gear up to half the cost. Any more questions, shoot away or feel free to send me a PM.

If the waders are out there used, I'd like to know where.

I've been scanning Craigslist, but haven't had any luck.

I also love goose hunting. I tend to hunt the early goose season in South Dakota before archery season starts. Then around december hit up Nebraska until the season ends. Here are some honkers from last weekends hunt in south dakota.

There is a bunch in MN on craigslist but unless they are new and you can verify it, I'd be a little skeptical buying used waders that you don't see in person. They make patch kits but I've seen some pretty nasty tears in waders before.

I got a brand new pair of columbia 1000 gram from craigslist. It was a guy on the southwest side of indy who buys taken back items from local stores. They were used but didn't leak, even got to test them. The only issue is that the buckle was broken, but they work perfectly.

So guys I do have a question also. I have 2 dozen mallards, but i feel I need to diversify.
    Would you get:
    Pintails
    Gadwalls
    Redheads
    Canvasback

Thankfully there's a flambeau outlet down the road from work. They do stormfront decoys and you can find them darn cheap.

get what you have in your area. also, pintails and gadwalls are puddle ducks, versus the redheads and canvasbacks which are divers. you can do well mixing them, but if you are a puddle duck hunter, I.E. mostly a mallard shooter, then pintails would be my first choice, assuming you have them. If you enjoy diver ducks, then canvasbacks are hard to beat. Mostly you just need to be where they are, all of those except the gadwalls have white on them, and will greatly enhance your spreads visibility. Get the magnum size, not standard or life size. You want something big so the birds will see them. Good luck!

Being in eastern sd waterfowl is amazing here. While I don't get into as much as others round here I still do a little.

JPT...Cabelas makes some good waders. Those Cabela's goretex waders are awesome when its warm out, like now. And when its cold its hard to beat the 1600's,and they have the 1600's on sale right now.
Watched a limit of geese die this afternoon.:nana:

Thanks for the input guys! I'll definitely be searching for some gear these next couple of weeks. I'll start off with some waders and basic stuff and if I like the sport enough I'll look into getting some calls and gear like that :tu:

I use Scheels waders and with 5mm neoprene and 1500 grams of insulation I generally wear basketball shorts under them.
