I am a die hard goose hunter. From February - April snows to August - January honkers, if I'm not in the deer stand you'll find me in a layout in a cornfield. I run 6 dozen Dakota XFD lessers and a couple dozen GHG fully flocked shells. I use all Gander Valley Custom Calls. If you haven't heard of them, definitely check them out! Anyone who has not tried snow goose hunting I HIGHLY recommend it! We had multiple 90+ bird days last spring and many other good hunts. Here are a few pictures from previous seasons:
Make one. Go to youtube and look for how to make lanyard. Very easy to do. I've made mine and my sons.
Great pics guys! The only thing I am not excited about is taking time out of my deer hunting, but I am sure it will be worth it. Waterfowl hunting has always sparked my interest and now I finally get to take a crack at it.
You won't mind it taking away the deer hunting time once you get started! What do you guys think about keeping this thread going for the season and making a little photo journal of some of our duck/goose hunts for the year? I think that'd be pretty sweet!
if nyc wasnt so strict with the process for obtaining a shotgun permit, i would definitely go waterfowl hunting. just looks like fun and camaraderie with buddies.
Maybe we should sweet talk one of the mods into starting a waterfowl section. yes yes... I know it's a bowhunting site, but we have other hobbies too.
I plan on going out for the first time this year. I attended a waterfowl workshop that was put on by the Indiana DNR and it was very informative. I also won a dozen mallard decoys at the end of the workshop. You can't beat free decoys.
Agree! I was out for the opener with bow in hand. In Ohio its legal to use a longbow to hunt geese. Didn't have any luck (missed a 62 yard shot) but had well over 100 birds dump into 100 yards of us. This year I will be doing more waterfowl than deer due to the pup. Grnhd - Sounds good to me, we'll have to keep in touch during the migration and bounce around a little to get on the birds. Those snow goose hunts look like a blast guys!!! Once I feel my pup is confident in himself and I'm 100% confident in him I will make the trek to do that.
Where was this at? Also, where in IN do you hunt? I'm still very much a rookie. Just been getting gear and going with friends when I can. I've hunted one state pond up north and at Atterbury once. Hoping to get out this weekend.
It was at a conservation club just north of Martinsville. I will probably meet up with some guys I know from the Hunting Indiana forum and hunt at the Goose Pond FWA.
I've never really hunted the rut because I'm usually in the duck blind as soon as duck season opens. This year, however, I plan to wait it out a bit and bow hunt a lot more. Duck hunting was my first passion but as of lately I find myself drawn to bowhunting deer more. I want to experience hunting the rut and see what its all about. But as soon as that activity dies down in the woods I'll certainly be on the water slamming ducks again.
I'll have to join that forum. I live in East Central Indiana between Greenfield and Shelbyville. It's not much for waterfowl hunting. Most water sources are near houses and if not, they are near a woods that someone deer hunts, so they're not going to give rights to duck hunt when they're trying to deer hunt. There may be more places that I just don't see yet. I'm still very much a rookie.
While I love bow hunting big game, I truly would rather waterfowl hunt on any given day. I generally bow hunt deer up until gun season starts (early-mid November here) and then start hitting the waterfowl exclusively through mid February. I hunt corn fields 99% of the time and mainly target Canada geese with some mallards mixed in (when in season).
