Just curious if anyone else rabbit hunt's on here. I mainly go in ohio where im from but im going to do some in nc this year when I get back from the deployment. If anyone goes and would like some company or would like to try it in any of the two states let me know and Ill get you on some cottontails. Vary fun if you have never done it before and good eating if you know how to fry them or make a stew.
I have a kennel of beagles and run all year round. We make week long trip mid oct to Maine to hare hunt. And after the deer season is over in NY we rabbit hunt someplace every weekend.
I used to rabbit hunt with my dad almost every Saturday. We had four or five beagles and we would usually see a couple huge bucks but I would always have 6 shot in my 20 gauge. I have been a few times since but I mostly shoot them with my bow now and then from a tree stand or while walking to or from my stand. Thanks for your service, please be safe and I hope you get a huge pile of bunnies when you get home. I'd come join you but that's just a bit far from Alabama. They are delicious, especially in gumbo, mixed with some good spicy pork sausage.
Thanks muzzy man I appreciate it, I havnt found a good spot to go in nc. Sucks here compared to ohio deer are small too.
I did a lot of rabbit hunting in high school and college. That was back when it was ok to drive out to a rural area with train tracks and just start walking. Most of those areas are subdivisions now. I usually hit public land around here once or twice a year.
Rabbit hunting with a dog is awesome, but I use a Redtail instead of a shotgun...lol.. Here a few pics from some of our outings.
Not sense I lived in Georgia. As a kid we had a mixed breed dog that was the greatest rabbit dog ever. Funny story... in the beginning... she would always run for home when we first fired a gun. One day my brother who was 3 years older and I were walking hunting ruffed grouse. The dog was along for the adventure. She jumped a rabbit and took off after it. My brother and I stood where the rabbit left from. In no time the dog had circled the rabbit right back to us. My older brother shot it with the 12 guage. A half minute later the dog showed up. Honestly, she looked at the gun, she looked at the dead rabbit, she looked at the gun... and from that day on, this mutt mixed spitz and spaniel became the greatest rabbit/ grouse dog you ever saw. We jumped off the school bus every day and ran to the house ripping off our clothes to "Change into OLD clothes". The dog would be bouncing all over the place waiting for us to get ready. We were really poor country folks and every rabbit, grouse, fish or whatever was a valued food source. One morning after a banner day of hunting with me... Old Skippy couldn't get up. I was pissed at my dad for days for putting her down.... but it was the right thing to do at the time. Loved that dog for 12 years. When I got out of the service and moved to Georgia I picked up a couple basset/beagle mixed dogs. One was big and one was smaller. I called the Mutt and Jeff. They didn't have the speed of Skippy... but dang they had the noses. We chased Georgia rabbits for several years. When I moved to Texas I gave them to a friend. I had 2 other dogs to drag to Texas. He had a bunch of hounds he used to hunt deer during the Georgia Dog Days. His deer dogs killed Mutt and Jeff the first week.
Ya Dave those pics are awesome!!! Ya I went rabbit hunting in Maine a few times One of the times it was -35 degrees it was miserable. But fun when the weather was tolerable. Lots of action with the beagles..
Josh we usually go around zanesville or new concord so ill def. let you know when we go out, that hawk hunting looks cool haha but i like shooting them not having someone do it for me.
