I have infloor heat with an electric boiler, I have off peak power so I have a back up forced air propane furnace that never gets used. Can I use the ductwork to circulate air from up stairs? The main room has the cathedral ceiling and all the heat goes up stairs would like to be able to circulate. Can I use that existing ductwork?
Yes. Works well if you have returns both up and down stairs. On our thermostat we have a separate setting for the blower usually recirculate or on...it just moves the air around the house...
Yes what Bill said ^^^^ I do the same thing. Burn wood for heat and once and awhile I kick on blower only on thermostat just get some air circulating. It's also a propane heating system, but never runs. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Yeah did a little looking I can run that furnace in fan only mode and further filter the air beyond the air exchanger.
Feel like an idiot. Granted I have zero experience in central heating and cooling but still, live and learn I guess. I could have been circulating the hot air from upstairs the last two winters, had I run the back up furnace on fan only, and filtered the air more. We leave the infloor heat at 68 and fire up the propane fireplace when we get home and in the morning when we get up. It has been a dusty winter and must be dealt with.
Speaking of heating and cooling/ductwork. Is it necessary to have your ductwork cleaned every year? We've been homeowners for a year and not sure if that's just a new thing or if it's now recommended by professionals.
Different heating season up here and it gets drier, if you load up furnace filters in 30 days an indication it might be time.
I respectfully disagree. It’s just not an annual thing…but feel free to pay somebody if you feel good about it… Give a quick eyeball to the ductwork just past the filters on the return…and or pull a register to verify. These are gonna be where a lot of grime may accumulate. I remember the old house we had in NY had registers in the floor that would collect, well you name it, worse than any ceiling registers will ever see…
My dryer vent goes thru the ceiling to vent outside, that needs to be cleaned every year so might as well get the other duct work done while they are there.
Well yeah, easier for me to just work and make $ and have somebody else do it properly and professionally.
If you're on salary you're not really making anymore money than if you stayed home and did it yourself are you? Lol
I'm with you and I live "up north". Wifes girl friend talked her into get the duct work "cleaned" because girl friends husband started a duct cleaning service. Though he would make a killing. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA After 26 years there wasn't much to speak of. Use a GOOD (not one of those cheap $2 blue ones you can see through) filter, replace it every 30 days the furnace/air is running. Drier vent is a totally different animal.
Dryer vents are a different animal. I prefer to use straight wall vent piping for dryers. A lot of people use too much fabric softener which can leave a residue on the inside of the vent. Lint that gets by the filter will stick to the walls of the vent that are coated with the residue. Build up is especially bad where the vent is restricted. Ie. Bends or corregations in the piping. Since it looks like Sota has his question answered i'm going to do a slight hijack here. Anyone use or have any experience with mini split AC systems?
They work great for what they are. In one day you will have working heat and cooling. They usually are very efficient. They do burn electric, so expect a higher bill in the summer. Biggest down fall is longevity. Won't last anywhere close to a in home system. The units are fairly inexpensive and you save alot on install over a traditional setup, not paying for all the ductwork. The place I see them shine is when they are used for supplemental heat and AC. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
I have been thinking about getting one for upstairs for the summer it gets toasty even with central AC. It would only get used in the summer on the weekends June thru August.
