First year my wife and I attempted a garden. We did a raised bed with cedar wood. Kept it simple this year as neither one of us had great confidence. Tomatos, bell peppers green and red, onions. Seems to be doing awesome as the onions I can literally see the growth daily. Peppers are blooming so I think it should be a success. If all is well I will add a few more beds next season.

Cool!! Question for ya Ron, when you grow your onions how do you maintain them? The stems on mine grow like crazy but the onion Itself (the bulb) doesn't get very big. I was told that onions grow more on top of the ground so this year after they all came up I pulled a bunch of dirt away so they were barely covered In the ground (the bulb). We'll see If that works. How do you go about It?

    Nice!

I'm in the middle of the woods and have no opportunity for such unless I planted in raised beds. We usually throw some tomato's in a half barrel to satisfy our needs. They claim that 5 tomato plants will save ya $100 a year. Your doing well Steve!

You've got it Shultzy. If you pull the dirt away from "bulb" then they will get bigger. Also, once the onion "goes to seed" I pinch that off as well.

My garden is doing great right now. I have:

    lettuce
    beets
    potatoes
    green beans
    corn (silver queen)
    onions
    tomatoes (several types)
    green bell peppers
    zucchinni
    cucumbers

I lost about 12 tomato plants to cutworms so I had to replant. I came up with a pretty good solution to prevent future occurences. I bought some wire loom and cut it in 3-4" pieces and put it around the plants' stalks. Haven't had a problem since.

Onions, potatoes, cuccumbers, peppers, sweet corn, brocolli, radishes, beets, ginger, chives, green onions, peas, green beans, watermelon, cabbage, lettuce, carrots.... I think that's it....

Then we have blackberries raspberries, and gooseberries growing here too.

And we have the best dang black walnuts in the world here every year too. But what a smegging pain to hull and crack them!

When you say "pinch It off" and "goes to seed" are you saying your cutting the stem when It starts to bloom? If so, how short you cutting them?

Thanks allot for the Info Finch, very much appreciated!!!

I used to plant a variety of stuff but you can only eat so much of it and then I ended up giving it away. We are going a different route this year. Just a lot of tomatos and hot peppers (cherry, jalapeno, banana, cayenne). When they come in we will be canning our butts off.
