I've been super interested in General Aviation recently and have been thinking about my soon upcoming mid life crisis of buying a motorcycle or going to flight school. How often do you guys fly? I have a lot of car trips in the 2-4 hour range that I think if possible would be fun to fly. Real life feed back would be appreciated.
Great idea. I’m not a pilot but have had a couple in my family and I’m around aviation all the time. It’s a commitment, you need to fly and stay current. Good luck with it if you decide to go that way. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
my son is CFI (Certified Flight Instructor) it is defiantly a commitment. (I know this doesn't help you, but he is in Vermont being your from MO and or NEB) I know he loves it.
My father-in-law had a Piper Archer II that he taught me to fly. I flew it from Texas to Iowa for the longest trip with a stop in Oklahoma for fuel. They used to pick us up and we would fly to Omaha or Kansas City for dinner and back home in one evening. I had the bug for a while but he lost his hearing and had to give up his pilots license before I made the commitment to get mine. One of my best friends has a Beechcraft Baron twin engine. We have flown with them to Destin, FL for a week and go places like Nashville or to Arkansas golfing for a few days at a time. Private planes definitely make travel a lot of fun. The rental car companies will bring the car right out onto the tarmac next to the plane and we throw our luggage in and go. My wife said, "This is the life I was meant to live." That being said, I don't think a two hour drive is enough to justify a plane. 4 hours is getting there, but you really just have to have the passion to fly and do it a lot to stay sharp. Joining a club that owns several planes and paying for time might be a good alternative to buying, at least to start out. A small group of friends looked into buying a Pilatus PC-12 turboprop but decided we could buy time on NetJets for about the same money and not have the additional exposure to ownership issues. When I retire, I think that may be a serious consideration.
You all enjoy flying in Dr killers, I am going to stick to planes with restrooms. I spent enough time bouncing around in a little plane doing air fire detection.
Saw the title of this thread and thought you the OP was looking to find a pilot in Georgia. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
