I'm piecing together my plans to transfer from a community college to a university after next semester to pursue a degree in forestry. Does anyone here have a background in that, if so is it an enjoyable career? Thanks for any input.
My dad is a section chief for the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry and loves his job. He gets out in the field a lot and does some neat work. Usually he is marking timber on public land or helping private owners manage their land. Get to be out of an office and in the woods. Doesn't get much better than that! The little bit I know about it seems great, sounds like a way I can use an education, make good money, and do something for 30 years that doesn't make me miserable everyday.
Forestry is an awesome job for the experiences, variety(timber marking, running lines, sampling, procurement, mapping, management plans, etc), working in the woods, and seeing/learning all types of country...usually you won't make a lot of money and sometimes work can be scarce(lots of foresters competing up here).
I see it as a chance to make a good income, I know it will never make me rich. I do worry about the job market as far as nongovernment jobs go. To make myself more marketable to wildlife and fisheries I'm considering taking the option to minor in wildlife management as well.
