I messed up my right shoulder about 1-1/2 yrs ago(I'm a right handed shooter), it still gives me grief once in awhile. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this injury and if it has affected their performance? Anything you do to prevent further injury?
Best thing to do to prevent further injury is turn the weight down. Today's more efficient bows do just fine. I shoot 64lbs to hunt, 55-60lbs for 3D, and 47-52lbs for indoor spots. I don't see any reason to shoot more than that.
Good points I guess I should mention I havent got a bow yet, I'm still looking. My shoulder concerns me though, the last time I put serious pressure on that joint in the wrong way it hurt for weeks. I found some ideas for exercises that should help strengthen the supporting muscles.
He had an arthroscopic surgical procedure on his shoulder.. Do yourself a favor and get some Glucosomine & Chondroitin with MSM. Any health food/vitamin store or section should carry it. I've had some serious orthopedic injuries and issues throughout my life, and, I swear by this stuff !! Once you start, dont stop for at least 6 months. I take it consistently. A rotator cuff is actually just 4 muscles and tendons. Depending on how severe your tear is, I wouldnt be drawing back a bow at all. Try to keep the inflammation down by icing it often. Go see a surgeon.
Ok thats what I figured he must mean. Already visited a specialist about the injury, he says its fine and doesnt need surgery. I've been taking glucosomine for awhile, that stuff is awesome! It helps out a lot. I'm gonna see if I can hook a bungee cord on my bow and work the muscles by drawing it back, should help strengthen the muscles. I will let ya know how it goes.
If your injury doesnt require surgery now, then, your plan should be not to further exacerbate it. I wouldnt put a bungee on my bow, but, thats me. I would try just looping a bungee or exercise band around something strong and gently, with a controlled motion, act as if you're drawing a bow. You "should" be drawing with your back muscles. When you do that, your bicep, shoulders and forearms will be secondary muscles, which is a good thing if you have a shoulder injury.
I had a shot and it took 4 months and now I'm good. Now I lay off shooting in the winter I never want to hurt it like that again.
