Hey everyone, I'm just getting into bow hunting and I just purchased a Hoyt Ultra Sport. I want to practice getting my aim down perfect, but don't want to spend money on a fancy target. Does anyone have any advice or information on what I could use to make my own that won't damage my arrows? Thank you.
I went to www.pabucks.com and searched building homemade target. It has a list of materials and plans for free.
I use a burlap bag stuffed with bubble wrap and plastic grocery bags, all free. The target will stop any arrow with a field tip and pulls out with ease! If you can't find a burlap bag or two try cooperseed.com, they sell em for like $2.00, get a couple of em'!
IMHO you are better off buying a quality bag target. Taken care of it will last you for thousands of shots. There are usually some Nice economical options in every area. To each their own. Dan
I use the plastic 'burlap' bags that dog food/seeds/chicken feed comes in. I stuff them with plastic grocery bags, left-over industrial plastic wrap, plastic shipping material... all free stuff. When one bag gets shot up, I just stuff all of it into another bag.
I have a Morrell Outdoor range w/ several thousand shots on it, and no pass-throughs. It's weathered, and tried and true. For the $90 paid for it, and one recovering bag $18, it's been well worth the money, that being said, I have a foam bail I picked up that was only $30, and it's also a good target, just won't hold tight for my set-ups, therefore I passed it on to my nephew. Under 60#'s, it's great, much over that, and it's not so good anymore.....I have a couple dogfood bags that I'm getting ready to stuff full of stuff and see how they do, though, but I'm not sure anything's gonna be the Outdoor Range for FP's, and for BH's the MDL targets are the BEST I've found.
Check with your local 3D clubs. I picked up six 3D animals at my local club (when they replenished their range) for $25/ea. Also.....I paid $3 at the local salvage yard for a HUGE grain bag (probably at least 4'x6'x4'. We were helping someone move, and she had a big roll of poly she was looking to get rid of. I stuffed the grain bag with the poly, and I've now obtained a nice blank bale target (hanging from the rafters of one of my out buildings). I have $3 in the entire target.
Yep, the feed bag and plastic option is good. You can also stuff them with old tarps (just be sure to cut all the grommets off). In place of the feed bag you can also buy target covers with spots on them so that it looks like an actual purchased target at a fraction of the cost. http://www.lancasterarchery.com/product_info.php?cPath=53_455&products_id=7177
