Heading out today to stretch the legs. No new snow for a while so we’ll see what happens. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Put on a little over two miles in three hours. Felt good to get a sweat going. Came up empty handed but it’s still early. Just like being in the woods. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Found the first shed of the season today. Still a little early but they are starting to drop. Give it another week or so and I’ll be hitting it hard. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Finally starting to see lots of half racks on cam. 2 of my biggest deer are still holding a full set but I don't think it will be long now. 2 weeks and we should be good to do a lot of walking. That's a good thing. I need the exercise.
Well my Friday plan of shed hunting was spoiled when we got an inch of snow, 35mph winds and 5 degree weather. Wasn't a total waste as I spent the day drinking with some Kansas buddies on the lake instead. Hopefully get out soon.
I've got a camera out to take inventory of the bucks that have made it through the hunting season. Almost every deer that has been through the area and been feeding on my standing soybeans has also been on camera. This year really surprised me by having 16 different bucks show up. That is at least 4 more bucks than usual. I realize that all of these deer are not resident deer but a lot of them are. Many are hanging around to be close to a good food source, my beans. I've had nights with as many as 40 at once. As of yesterday, more than half are still carrying their full set of antlers. Some are completely shed and some have shed only one side. I will refrain from intense shed hunting until more bucks are completely shed. I may look around the field a little but I won't be backtracking them back to where they are bedding. I want to keep them feeling comfortable and secure while remaining on or close to my land. No sense in pushing them around while they are still wearing their headgear. Last year I found 7 sheds in about a 5 acre spot. I am hoping to get out even more this year.
Same here! I guess the herd is healthy with this mild winter we have had... Most the big deer here are still holding both sides as of last nights cam pics. Someone also told me once that half racks will typically shed the other side within 48 hours. I call BS. I have had a pile of half racks for 3 weeks and most of them are still holding. I think out of all the bucks on cam only 3 have shed both sides...
Yep the majority in Pa and Ohio are still packing both sides. Snow just about melted off, I walked a mile between meetings today in a field, no such luck. Im eager to get out there.
This really sucks. The boys have 5 days off of school and I am not sure we can do much walking. Certainly don't want to push them off the properties we can walk. Maybe we will walk some public for the heck of it...
We've missed a lot of the bigger storms that the rest of MN has seen here in SW MN. Just hope it doesn't turn into a pattern for rain this summer.
Going after work today. One of my shooters have shed his antlers so hoping to find at least one side. lol
Once our snow melts here im gonna start walking a couple miles a couple days/week after work through the week and maybe 5-8 mi on sundays.
We still have a little bit of snow here too, i won't be putting on the miles until the snow is completely gone but I got the itch to go after finding the first one for the season so we will see after work if I have any luck today
Had no luck yesterday. Didn't push into the bedding areas cause there is still a lot of snow on the ground. Next weekend I'll probably hit it hard.
