Antlers in Velvet

Just wanted to pick your brains!! I shot my first deer that was still in velvet and I a curious what the procedure is for preserving them? I have never done it before and I would like to do a euro mount with this deer but do not want to ruin it!

 

great post....I have wondered this for quite sometime myself.

 

Don't do this until you find out for sure but it is my understanding that a taxidermist would scrape off the velvet because there is blood underneith. Once the velvet is removed a fake velvet is applied.

 

I will probably wind up taking it to a taxidermist. I have done plenty of euro mounts just none in velvet and I think it would look pretty cool when done I just don't want to destroy it.

 

Take it to a taxidermist. Some use formaldehyde for preserving.

 

I thought I heard they were injected with something but never new for sure or with what was used?

 

This might be helpful. Pretty sure you need to freeze them right away if you don't get them to the taxi quickly.

We were told to freeze right away. They inject something into them to preserve it.

 

They can be chemically preserved but most good taxis prefer freeze drying them

Trevor hit it, chemical preservation works but most these days are freeze dried. Freeze your skull and rack and take it to your taxi
