If I am correct, it is good to have a protein filled food source for deer year-round, especially in antler grwoning time? We are wanting to have a few food plots next year and wanted to get an idea on what to use. Any recomendations on a good food/protein source to plant?

I'd also like an answer.....I've been seeing a lot of broken antlered deer.

I've recently caught pics on my trail cam of 2 bucks in the area with broken racks.

last year i saw a great big non-typical with great mass, 7 points on one side....but the other side as broken in velvet......later in the season he managed to break off the other side too (Mid/late November-ish)..so he was left with brow tines and stumps.

anyone with food plot suggestions for good strong racks, please share!

There are several key ingredients in antler growth and, as both of you said, protein is one of them. Annual and perennial food plots both can pack a protein punch, it is just choosing what is right for you that will get the results you're looking for.

Clover, chicory and alf-alfa blends all have very high protein content. There are also seed blends like Imperial Power Plant that packs a HUGE protein punch as it contains soybeans, sunflowers, peas, etc. It grows thick and tall, but it is an annual so its not going to provide forage year round.

Something that you shouldn't overlook is minerals. Whitetail Institute's 30-06 and 30-06 PLUS PROTEIN provide great nutrition for not only bucks but lactating does.
