I am headed out west tomorrow for our antelope trip. This is our second year going. We had a blast last year, but were not successful. Looking for any last minute tips. We will be attempting spot and stalk and ground blinds.
Never hunted one, so I can't give you tips. It's something on my to do list though. Good luck and I hope you are successful this year.
Good luck Alex I have never hunted antelope either so no tips. What part of the state u from and where out west will u be going. Once again good luck and be safe. Later Shane
From the Omaha area, we are headed out to the Oglala National Grasslands just a little north of Fort Robinson.
Carry a marine whistle around your neck. This is a trick you won't see in a hunting show. Antelope basically have 4 states of movement: 1. Standing still 2. walking 3. trotting/skipping 4. full speed running A lot of people have trouble getting antelope to stop while they're trotting/gallop and this is where the whistle comes into play. When they start running and you need them to stop in order to get a shot off, blow that whistle. Antelope are naturally curious in a lot of ways and will 9 times out of 10 stop at the sound of the whistle to see what it is. I have killed many of antelope this way (with a rifle). Now, if they're running all out at 50mph, there's no way you're stopping them. They're in "get the hell out of dodge" mode and won't stop for nothing.
They also give you a high pitched snort/weeeeeze before they bug out. Give it right back to them. They will turn and look. You will have an extra 4-5 seconds at most to get the shot off. They will also stop and look at the sound of the bow being shot (mine last year did this). Take a decoy.
