I was going to bring this up as well. All the antelope I have eaten have came from south east Wyoming where there main diet is sage brush. I'm sure it tastes better with a better diet. Sage brush antelope tastes like azz. Even the jerky and sausage needs to be doctored up. It can be a tough hunt no matter the method you choose. You can sweat to death over a water hole in a blind or you can spot and stalk for 12 miles. I prefer the water hole method for bow hunting.
I have never hunted them, but what I do know is that they have amazing eye sight and are skitish. I would imagine it can be done as a bow hunt, but will be hard. You would almost have to use a ground blind over a water hole, but I have seen some pro hunters using a cardboard cutout decoy over their bow.
This kind of sums it up.... It's edible but at best it can be close to the same as venison... Neither approaching the level of elk or moose for table fare.
Growing up in Wyoming and being raised on wild meat, antelope was on the table every year. I recall many times my mom telling my dad not to hunt antelope because it stunk up the house when she cooked it. :D I've had them cooked every way imaginable and after quick kills and not so quick kills. Never found anything that made them "consistently good". We too used them in tacos and sausage recipes but I have had a few that were eaters. I've hunted them my whole life and they are one of my favorite animals to hunt; probably because they are easy to see and there are lots of them. I prefer spot and stalk. They rut in September and that's when I have seen decoys work. It isn't a surefire thing though. I've seen antelope round up the does and leave and I've seen them come from several hundred yards. If you don't enjoy spot and stalk (and it can be tough depending on the terrain you're in) the blind will be your best bet. Water holes are the norm and a good rain will mess that up. However, if you are on private land, you should be able to watch where the goats enter a field and set up you blind there. They do not tend to be shy of the blind like deer and will often come right in after it is set up. I always like to have it up early but it is not crucial. See the attached video of a Bowhunt or Die episode for proof. :D If you plan to spot and stalk, make sure you are proficient at 50 yards. Antelope have the eyesight equivalent of 8x binoculars and that makes it a real challenge. Bowhunting Wyoming Antelope | 3 Goats in 3 Days only on Bowhunt or Die
I would love to go on an antelope hunt. I think they are a great looking animal. I would want to shoot one on a spot and stalk hunt though for sure! It would obviously be harder to achieve that goal bowhunting but man would it be sweet. If I were unsuccessful leading up to the last couple of days of the hunt I'd try and put an arrow in one by a water hole. I put in for a draw in Wyoming two years ago, but never got the draw unfortunately. I hope one day I get the oppertunity to hunt an antelope. Beautiful animals.
