Killed my first ever antelope on 9/2. First morning of the hunt and only 2 hours in at that. This was my second time hunting them and both with outfitters in South Dakota. Got in the blind about 6am and waited for it to get daylight. Not long after I could see some antelope up on the hill about 500 yds away or so. A few does and a decent looking buck. They fed around up there and hoped they would come to the water hole to drink. The buck eventually walked off up over the hill and the does also fed away back across the hillside. I sat there looking out the windows to try to be ready for anything that might come in. Ranging around the water hole again just before 8am and a nice buck come running over the berm of the water hole and right past me at about 25 yds. I jumped up to see where he went and then saw a smaller buck was coming in behind me. He ran that buck off for a ways. I looked out of one of the other windows and saw a doe drinking. She didn't drink long and then I saw two others with her. Probably her fawns. They quickly went south and took off out of sight which definitely worked in my favor. The buck finally came back looking for the does and walked into the side of the water hole I was set up to shoot. The chair creaked a little as he was getting closer to me and I just held my breath that it didn't spook him. Then I saw the tips of his horns and then his head as he moved in to drink. I drew my bow back and put my 20 yd pin on his front shoulder. He stepped in at 22.5 yds and leaned down to drink and I let the arrow go. Perfect heart shot. He ran about 20 yds and fell over. I couldn't believe it happened so fast. It seemed like the whole experience lasted 15-20 minutes from the time I first saw him until he went down, but it was only about 10 minutes at most. I couldn't be more happy. Hunting these awesome critters is so much fun. I can't wait to do it again.
Nice work!!! That's a great looking goat and a perfect shot. Perfect way to start off the season! I've killed a handful of antelope out in Wyoming so I'm taking a break from them for a few years to chase elk and mulies instead. But I do plan on on taking my oldest boy out there in the next 2 or 3 years to hunt goats. It's an awesome way to get introduced to Western hunting.
I've been adding points in Wyoming. I'm hoping to take my dad out to Montana next year if we're lucky to draw a rifle tag. They are a lot of fun to hunt.
I killed my first antelope recently and it happened to be in WY as well. My wife's sister's daughter (our niece) got married and I was told, "We're going to the wedding." So I picked up a tag and made lemon ade from lemons. My first time hunting west of the MS River.
