The only difference is this time was the first one I've killed without my dad sitting by my side.
The first 3 days of the season were rough on me, to say the least. But I planned a trip with 2 buddies to head out to the farm Friday night-Sunday afternoon for some turkey hunting, fishing, and a weekend away. Caught some fish Friday night, woke up Saturday and headed out the door. Dropped one off in a field where if you sit long enough you'll see turkeys, he saw nothing but hens. Me and my other buddy headed off down a road and about halfway down it I strike a bird with an owl hoot across a valley and on a ridge, on a different road. So we headed back up about 100 yards to a cut across, and got on the same road as the bird. The closer to where I thought he was, the more I realized that we had a run in with a bird roosted in the same damn spot that gobbled his brains out on the roost, flew down, hung up, and shut up after a while. Well this guy did the same thing :D. We worked our way down to a field and sat for a while, and headed back up to the house. We did some fishing that evening in rain and a tornado warning, let's just say it's not fun lol.
On to Sunday. Alarm goes off, hit the snooze button. Lie in bed thinking about whether to even get up and go out with it being windy and rainy. After the alarm goes off again I realize I only got 3 more weekends of this left for the year and I need to make the most of it. We get dressed and head back out the door. After dropping off the same buddy that sat in the same spot Saturday, me and the other one went to the field we sat in for a while Saturday. Right after flydown my buddy spots a hen all the way across the field at about 450 yards. After it starts raining we decide to go climb under a cedar tree in the middle of the field, and move the decoys to where they're more visable (field has a lot of contour). After a while, Matt decides he's gonna catch some Z's. As soon as he falls asleep I hit his arm and tell him there's a turkey headed towards us, but it's a hen. She moved into our decoys and sat around feeding. The closest she got to us was about 3 yards. It was awesome. I turn my head to where she came from when she wasn't looking, and sure enough here comes another bird. I tell Matt to keep an eye on the hen and I'll watch the other one. Once it starts getting to about 100 yards I keep telling him unless I'm seeing things this bird's head is as red as can be. He gets to about 75 and bends down to eat and that's when I saw his beard, and told Matt this thing is getting some lead thrown at it. He comes in to about 40 yards, covering all that ground in half strut. Once he gets to 40 I ease my gun up real slowly and wait. With how we were positioned on the tree I had to shoot left handed. He gets to about 30 and I tell Matt I'm shooting. I shoot and the bird drops. Since we were pinned down for so long my whole right leg fell asleep. After I shot I jumped up and tried running and got about 5 yards before eating dirt :D. Got up again and tried over, got about another 10 lol. Get up for the 3rd time and finally get to the bird. After everything I put my tag on its leg, gave Matt the bird, and headed up to my truck to bring it down the county road since the farm roads were too muddy to drive. After we get it back up to the house Matt goes and sits with the other guy while I clean up the house and talk to my dad about my kill, and my brother's kill (seperate farm about 75 miles from where we were). I text from Matt saying "bird gobbling coming up road" I tell him keep still and don't call too much. As soon as it sends I get a call from the other buddy "Matt just killed one man it was awesome. Come pick us up". I drive to them and he also killed himself a nice 2 year old. Only his 2nd turkey, and 1st without an adult.
What a great day to say the least.
My bird was 20 pounds, 3/4" and 1/2" spurs, and a 9" beard

Thanks everyone. It was awesome and I can't wait to get back out this weekend and try it again, except this time I'll be on public land.
