OK, The MN Deer Hunter's Association voted within its chapters last month on the issues that they wanted to push as an organization. One of the topics that was voted on was the possibility of having a special October rifle season in the Boundary Water Canoe Area (an area along the MN/Canadian border that has motor and access restrictions). There would be a limited number of tags drawn for this yearly hunt allowing hunters from both MN and abroad the opportunity to have a true "wilderness" style rifle hunt in MN. All chapters in MN passed the resolution to support this, with exception of course of the local chapter. I'm all for the expansion and promotion of the hunting sports, but I have to say I'm with the locals on this one. Here's why. These areas currently have hunting access. You want to hunt it with a rifle, great, do it during the existing season. Yes that's the time of year that the lakes beginning to freeze, making it hard to access the area... Boo Hoo! When did we become a country of people that required everything to be easy?!? Grow a pair. You want the wilderness experience, then it's going to be hard, that's what makes it a wilderness experience. You want to hunt the area in Oct, fine, then pick up you bow and paddle your lazy a$$ into the BWCA. Why should we create a whole extra hunt, costing more time and money for an already strung out DNR, just because people are too lazy to do it current way. I guess I'm just venting. I have nothing against rifle hunting, I do it every year in WI. But making it easier for everyone to have the "Wilderness" hunt experience make about as much sense to me as making it easier for everyone to have a house... Ahh... much better:d
How's the deer population up there? How's the buck to doe ratio? I'm sure the MDHA should have some sort of clue to what the numbers are.
