Alot of the deer in our area have them. No sure if its diet, genetics, or what, but most of them are darker than you'd normally see. Embarrass, to be precise...
I'd bet It's more to do with BIG woods then anything. Not much for fields up there, just woods and more woods so the sun doesn't get a chance to bleach the racks as quick. That's way up north!! Supposedly It's one of the coldest places In Mn during the winter. Why Is that anyway?
Might could be that... I never really gave it too much thought. Just kinda figured that's how the deer there are. But it makes complete sense. Most of it is low land or swamp and cold air sinks.... sits there for a long damn time too! Opening day of gun season this year, I was chilled until around 10:00 when the sun could actually hit me. And it was a warm opener to boot.... we've had temps of 3 and 5 degrees on last gun weekend before. Final muzzleloader a couple years ago it was -17 and -20 on Saturday and Sunday.... guess growing up there you don't think as much about it, but yeah, it's frickin' cold there. About the only thing I haven't done is a real late bow hunt up there. Mostly because I don't know if I could even draw my bow at those temps in late december
