Absolutely there were. Now, they have found out a way to gain mass attention in a way they didn't long ago. This is copycat after copycat.
as discussed in another recent thread (hijacked, but discussed) the reason is this - kids are no longer taught to revere a higher authority than themselves.
Yes but they weren't bombarded with 24/7 reports on the every $#ity thing thats happening somewhere in the world. That $#it wears you down and kids have no history to balance it with. They start reading the paper at 16-20 years old and it's all they know. I gave up primetime news years ago just for that reason. I'd read the morning news and it would take me 2-3 hours till I could stop thinking about something horrible that happened the night before. I think we need to worry about our own walk and place in the world and not take time away from our friends and family wringing our hand over the new Egyptian President or whether or not Iran has the bomb. But that me.
And certainly there are other fundamental reasons why kids turn into loners and will go to such great lengths to gain that attention. This isn't a one stop shop problem for sure.
This never happened when I went to school. So you have to ask what has changed in the past two generations that resulted in this type of activity.
Here's a idea, stop giving kids everything they want. Stop teaching them from a young age there's no losers or disappointment in life. Stop throwing parents in jail that discipline their kids for abuse. Stop just throwing these idiots in jail and letting them get a lighter sentence for pleading mental health or whatever else. There's hardly any consequences anymore for anything because it might hurt somebodies feelings.
You hit it on the head....noone is held accountable for their actions anymore....my wife sees it every day as a special ed teacher....(not lumping special ed kids alone into this....just stating the experiences she's had).....these kids can do whatever whenever and they literally get a slap on the hand and shoved right back in....i worry about her constantly as she's been hit...had desks thrown at her....bitten...you name it and all they can do is try and "properly" restrain them (mind you she's about 110 soaking wet and has kids 3 and 4 times her size flipping out on occasion).....they "arrest" the kid....they get a ticket....and within a day or two they are back in class to do it all over again....once in a while a judge will send them to jail for 30 days but then right back out into the system again....a lot of these kids and other kids need a tremendous amount of help mentally and are not receiving it....i could go on all day but the whole system is flawed beyond belief and there is no sign of it getting better
Granted the numbers are increasing exponentially the last few years... You would be surprised at the number of school shootings that took place each year - Maybe the media just did not cover them as close as they do now? List of school shootings in the United States
Yup mnhunterr. They realized that sensationalism school shooting = $$$. So though the uptrend may not be as severe as we think, we are lead to believe this due to increased media coverage.
I also don't believe these little suicide murderers should get the pictures posted all over our TV's and newspapers after the fact. Put a court ban on any images of these little basturds for at least 10yrs. I'm sick of seeing these little hairless face kids with these (i'm mad at mommy and the whole world) looks on their faces. What do they even know about being P,O'd? Put your life saving down on a home for your wife and family and have it taken away after 20yrs because you missed a few payments. That will pi$$ you off. Have you truck you just got pay'd off after four years stolen and totaled by some 14yr old wanting to take a joy ride, That will pi$$ you off. but I don't want to go off on a rant...
heard a fairly profound statement today on Glenn Beck: "People are created to be loved. Things are created to be used. The problem with society today is that things are now loved, and it's people who are used." Pretty sure that concept adds to this conversation at some level. Either way, it's true.
Higher taxes are going to take care of all our problems, if you don't work. Higher taxes is never the answer to a problem, a better answer is that billion dollars Obama just gave to a foreign country could fund security at a lot of schools why don't we keep that money here instead. We as a nation need to stop looking at the government to fix problems and fix them ourselves. Schools are easy targets with a bunch of emotionally unstable kids with no security of course this is going to happen.
Since that shooting is near my hometown, I get kind of mad when I read my news feed as they're calling for tougher gun laws.
There is a easy solution to this issue. ALL school employees be allowed to complete training and carry. It may not prevent it however it may neutralize the threat much faster in turn saving lives.
even my podunk town back in Indiana has a School Resource Officer, who is a full-time city cop assigned to the school. By now they may even have 2. Anyway, they served both as a deterrent to that type of thing as well as someone who interacted with kids on a daily basis, gave kids exposure to LEOs and the concept that they aren't all jerks, and also worked with the guidance counselor staff in the event of outside of school legal issues (abusive situations, out of school bullying, etc.) This most recent school thing was stopped by a SRO. "Only" one kid got killed. I don't know that I want all school staff packing, but I do agree that those who want to and are qualified (legally and skill-tested) should be able to.
