You are forbidden at posting doing 40 pound hammers. This old man is easily led or senile and impressionable and you’re gonna kill me.

    Haha

In my day ? The word “ballin” meant something else. lol I won’t divulge. I did do my share of course, nothing to show from it however. Wish I made a couple mistakes in my 20’s, oh well.

I’m like Mickey Mantle. If I had known I’d live this long, I’d had taken better care of myself.

I do thank God I’m still standing and doing what I want relatively pretty good even though I’m losing ground day by day.

If I can impress 1 thing on the younger guys it’s this. Focus on getting as much strength as possible naturally now while you can. Starting higher in strength when you hit 55 and your T starts dropping you have a higher starting point of strength drop. I do think that’s why I’m still able to hunt with a 80 pound bow.

I wholeheartedly agree with your statement of starting early on fitness. It makes a huge difference as you age and is not nearly as difficult if you've had a lifetime doing it. As far as your statement about drawing 80lbs, I remember back in the day of watching a Dan Fitzgerald video. He was drawing 85lbs and shooting through brand new 55 galion drums. Being full of testosterone at the time I thought that's what I needed to be doing, so I did for several years. Then one day, me and some friends were at our local archery shop. They had a Hoyt Pro Hunter that someone had special ordered. It was 100lbs draw weight. Several of my buds picked it up and tried to draw it, they couldn't do it. Well since I had been regularly drawing 85lbs I picked that thing up and jerked it back with seeming ease. I put it back and said what's wrong with you guys, that was nothing! What I didn't tell them was I hurt for a week after that and couldn't draw my own bow! Oh the effect testosterone has on us!!

    That's a classic story.

Former Forum bum racewayking used to shoot an 80 lb Hoyt somethingorother. He had it out at our local club one day and a few of us were testing it out. I distinctly remember a couple bros who shall remain nameless couldn't get it drawn back. I always found that amusing.

I drew back an 80lb Prime Inline 5 last year at a local shop, just to see how it felt. Easier than pulling back my 70lb Hoyt and it had a more solid back wall, felt like I could hold it at full draw all day. I would have bought it on the spot, but, at almost $2000 by the time it has a sight, rest, and arrows for it...well, I like being married, most days.

$2 G's these days is about what a new bow will run you ready to shoot. Prime has really come a long way ! They way you workout Cant, you can draw 100 easily.

80 pounds is not a big deal. Back in my day, pretty much every bow was a 60-80 draw. My true first fastflite string bow was a Hoyt Super Slam. It was 60-80. Then all of a sudden they started to do 10 pound increments. I shot that Hoyt up until shooting a 80 pound PSE G-Force,then ordered a PSE from their custom shop hence my name, Mikey ?Custom-g. A Carerra riser with G-Force Maxis MN cams. A Custom G Force. I shot that biow for years, still have it hanging in the closet. It's 70-80,as were the G-Forces too.

My point is, 80 was a way of life. So we had to work out, or most of us already did anyway. I'm talking 70's 80's time frame. I started lifting weights early 70's. So being I was hunting with a Bear Kodiak Magnum which is a 55 pounder and far more effort needed to draw and hold then any 80 pound bow. So yeah it started young with me mainly on account of me being a runt and playing football and baseball.

I never stayed in the gym because life happened and my job as a Finance Director was killer type days and hours. I remember when I hit about 40 in 2000 or so ? My best friend who died of brain cancer in 2015 was a tall thin basketball player. I went into the gym to get in shape because my cholesterol was 274 or something. So I decided then that it was my last chance to put strength back on, and I wanted to max best I could. I didn't do so great getting stronger but I got back up to benching 315 again, but the legs wouldn't respond well, the knees. Alex never wanted to do it,I did. So i'm hanging on from back then, 24 years ago. So what you do now @ 40 will last until your 65 if you are all natural no testosterone etc.

Didn’t work out yesterday, but I was so active at work and around the house, I hit 16,003 steps covering almost 7 miles.

Whenever I do 10,000 steps pretty much when I go pig hunting, I’m a bit sore.

I’m not sure I have on record doing 16k ? They didn’t have that stuff when I used to jog. lol

Back to 30 pound hammers today back and biceps. Worked out with my “son” Caleb today. Kid I take bow hunting who cuts my hair and calls me “Pops”. He’s jacked AF. T, Dekka and just coming off Tren.

BTW he’s wanting a 100pound bow. 80 not enough. Tren and T will do that to you. lol I laugh like all heck. Kid is getting HUGE. Runs 3-5 miles every morning. I mean completely JACKED

I've had a pretty good week of working out and eating clean, but my shoulders are a little tender this morning from rucking. I upped my total pack weight to around 50 lbs this week and hit it pretty hard a few days in a row, so I may have to take tonight off or reduce the weight to give my shoulders a chance to play catch-up. Once they're feeling better I will increase my weight to 60-65 lbs once a week and see how that feels. Eventually I'd like to do a 100 lb ruck so that's what I'm working up to.

All things considered, 75 Hard is going well this time around. I'm at Day 33 and down 6 lbs, which puts me just above 1 lb per week of weight loss and on track for right around 14-15 lbs in total. I'm not eating in as big of a calorie deficit as I was the last time around and taking in a lot more protein, so I didn't expect my weight loss to be as significant as last year. I started at 198 lbs and should end around 183-184. My current goal is to get to 180 and hold there for the remainder of this year, including the gauntlet of fall hunting season and the holidays. So far, so good.

I was going to take it easy this weekend, but then I remembered it was 75 HARD and I wasn't going to sissy out. So I upped the weight in my ruck and got after it in the rain on Friday night. It was amazing. Saturday I crushed it at the gym in the morning then another heavy ruck in the afternoon. Yesterday morning, I did a 3-mile ruck @ 50 lbs at a sub 15-minute pace, which is my new PB. 14:10 on that last mile was all downhill and I was trucking along as quickly as my old man legs would go without actually jogging.

    Image.jpeg

I may have slightly overdone my legs this morning. I wanted to test my HR recovery, so I maxed out on the stairs for a few minutes to get it up into the mid-160s, then measured how far it fell in 60 seconds. I went from 164 to 124, which is actually better than I expected. I did the same thing again with my step ups and got HR up to mid 160's, then rested for 1 minute and it fell to mid 120's again.

After that, I followed up with some heavy leg presses and pretty tall weighted step-ups, which wore me out.

I have a wake to go to tonight so I'm either going to walk at lunch or ruck after the kids go to sleep - haven't decided yet.

The hardest part is getting up off the couch and walking out the door, or shutting off your alarm and getting out of bed. I did NOT want to get out of bed this morning and snoozed a few more times than I wanted to. Eventually, I had to say to myself, "Zarr, quit being a p***y, and let's get moving." Once your feet hit the floor and the wheels are in motion, it's all downhill from there!

That's me to a T. Once I'm up, no problem get going. Definitely a struggle once and awhile just to get off that couch.

On a good note. Since it was daylight savings this weekend, I can now bike after work again. Tuesday I will be out killing myself on the bike, can't wait!

Here's my story on this subject. I'll get up and think do I really want to do this today? Sometimes I'll sit there and rationalize why I'm not going. Then I think, no I'll go but I'm only going to do this much. But once I get there and get started it always turns into alot more. I remember something I learned fromm early on. I would regret things if I didn't end up going but I NEVER regretted going after I was finished. Rock on guys!
