Yes, that correct three exercises, three reps per set, 40 total sets for each exercise done as a round with as little rest as possible.

I missed my regular Tuesday night bike ride. Just to much work and the heat keep me from going. Now feel bad for not going. But work is kicking my butt and I have been steady loosing weight the last 2 week from it. So I have that going for me.

Now deer season starts this week, I will be pushing my bike riding to the side for the fall and winter. I will try and fit in a ride every once and awhile, but most likely pick it back up at the end of winter. Will continue my back and core strength training though.

This is why we train. Haha. To kill deer!

My training will take a hit come deer season as well. Plan on having an even better diet and doing more intense, shorter workouts throughout the season. Keep me strong cardio and strength wise but not wear me out from too much volume.

I know somewhat in jest but it is an interesting question. Why do you train?

Myself, it has always been because of work. I don’t want a fair fight and I want to be able to function in a gunfight even if I’m not at peak.

It has now turned to a few things
    A) my job still drives it. Also I want to be able to continue to physically dominate my 22 year old troops so I can talk trash about the old guy still beating them and push them to be better.

    B) the lifestyle I want to lead. Hunting is a part of that, but I also want to experience as many cool things as I can. To see certain things you must be fit. I don’t want to be sedentary when I’m 65. I wanna be training when I’m 80.

    C) mental health. It has brought me from the brink and been my safe space so to speak during tough times. I can go to the gym and put my headphones in and hit things or lift things or slam things and it doesn’t matter what is going on outside those walls. “Just lift the bar”. Steel and sweat is my therapy often. It also allows me to continue to set and beat goals.

    D) for my family. I want to always be able to help, play and enjoy the outside with my kids. Additionally, I want to physically dominate my children in athletic events as long as I possibly can. Only partially joking. Lol. I do want play sports and train with my kids well into their adult years. I want them to be competitive but good sports, driven but thankful. I want them to see their dad be that.

Anyways I just got a little deep with the question on the way to the gym. I think it’s good to do some inward looking on why we do what we do.

I think this a great subject for this thread. I hope others will chime in and share their thoughts. Here's my motivation, which has changed somewhat since I began. A little more than eight years ago, at age 60, I was more than 100lbs overweight. I have worked in hospitals for most of my life. I have seen many people my age and even younger almost totally debilitated. Sometimes it wasn't their fault but many times it was due to their sedentary lifestyle. Whatever the reason the cycle was always the same; The less they did, the less they could do. And the less they could do, the less they did. At age 60 that was a wakeup call for me. I had nothing wrong but I was able to do less and less as I got older and was 100lbs overweight. I decided if I was going to do something about, it had to be now! So I embarked on a journey that saw me lose 110lbs. I can't even begin to express how my life changed. Increased energy, increased stamina, and a completely new and improved mental attitude. That was eight years ago and I can't ever imagine going back to that old lifestyle. At age 68 I don't know how many more years God will grace me with life but I intend to make them the best they can be! By the way, part of my motivation now is to show people, especially in my age group, thats its never to late to start, its never to late to make a change. You just gotta do it! I'd love to hear about others journeys and motivations. C'mon boys, let's hear it.

Currently in my life, I have 3 reasons to stay in shape or improve.

    1. Is I have bad back. I injured it when I was 15 and has never been the same, turn 43 next month. I've had it blow out on me 4 times to were I couldn't walk. 1 of those times I had to get surgery. It's nothing medical wrong, I'm just to hard on my self and push it to far. So working out is the only thing in life that makes it naturally feel better. I won't take medicine.

    2. Is for hunting. I have a style of hunting that I absolutely enjoy. I'm kind of sick in the head, because I almost like putting my self thru misery and push myself to get the most out of my hunt. If I wasn't in shape, I 100 percent couldn't hunt the way I do.

    3. Is my competive side. Absolutely love racing mountain bikes. With that you alway strive to beat the next guy. Can never be in too good of shape with this. I'm always want to be faster and pushing my self to get in better shape. Biggest thing holding me back here is just time. Family and work need my most attention, so I can only do so much.

Training has always been a part of my life. My Dad was a career Marine. We grew up in shape if you know what I mean. Always running. Then I went on to play college football. After college I began training and competing in submission wrestling and mma fighting. That took me into my jobs that required constant physical confrontations for nearly a quarter century. So I trained to win physical and weapon confrontations if necessary.

Even my job nowadays requires me to confront armed subjects and people who openly physically threaten me. So as I near 49 yrs old I train to be in great shape for my age in order to defend myself, health benefits, and to hunt hard. I hunt hard and push myself hard.

Potential for me. I let myself go for years after getting into IT. Went through a bad situation a couple of years ago and got back in to lifting as an escape, an antidepressant, and I just wanted to do better. I wasn't fulfilling my potential. I was a useless lump who drank too much and felt like crap. And honestly (and I can't believe nobody said it or I missed it) I wanna look good while feeling good! Lol.

I can't remember where I heard it, but most men fear no longer being seen as dangerous. Something like that and I agree.

I was obese as a teenager. At 16, I weighed 260lbs on my 5'8" height. I got pissed off at people teasing me and girls not wanting to date me. So I lost 100lbs by the time I graduated high school and have kept it up ever since. I turned fitness into a career. So now, I take care of myself for my families sake, career, and personal hunting ambitions. I plan on hunting elk out west every year once I can afford it. Unfortunately, that will probably be after the kids are out of the house. Have to keep myself in shape for those days in the future. Mountains don't climb themselves and elk are never easy to get out of the woods. Funny thing about the teasing and girls back in high school, most of them look now like I did then and they just accept it.

I have never strayed away from the gym for very long since I was a teen. My mother was always very active going to the gym, running, biking, aerobics, etc etc. I guess I learned from her example. Additional motivation over the years have been to look good naked, sports, most recently Kiteboarding, downhill skiing, formation skydiving.
My father died from a MI a few weeks before his 52 birthday. I’ve managed to outlive him and would like to continue that trend.
My wife is 37 and I’ll be 53 next month. She is really active so I need to stay fit too.
I want to set a good example for my daughter and patients.
Going to the gym and eating right is what I do and simply just part of who I am.

It's funny that you say you want to set an example for your patients, which I believe you should do. What's funny is over my career I've known more than a few cardiologists that were ranging in the 350lb range. It just always seemed to me that if any group of people wanted to set an example, it would be them.

Been putting down some decent mileage. About 10 miles in the last 3 days. Work had me ticked off so I used it to my advantage this morning. Haha. My old butt did 12 wide grip pullups. Been awhile since I've gotten over 10.

Good morning, guys and gals! After a week spent chasing stupid deer in Kentucky, I'm finally back. While I didn't "officially" work out while I was gone, I averaged 3.5-4.5 miles per day with all my gear, humping up and down hills and trees, and sweating my nuts off in the 90 degree heat and humidity. So I didn't feel bad about a few fries and a venison burger for dinner at night.

This morning was my first day back in the gym in about 10 days - I hit the stairs for 30 minutes (216 flights) and followed with a light push day. I was running a little late so I had to cut it short, but got in dips, flat bench, incline bench, tricep extensions and cable flies. Feeling good and ready to get back after it tomorrow again.

As for why I work out - I just want to be as healthy as I can for as long as possible. Like many others here, I have young kids and want to enjoy doing thing WITH them and not just watching them do things. I also want to set a good example for them as they grow up and teach them what it means to eat and live a healthier lifestyle than what is considered "normal" these days. The secondary benefit is that it makes my hunting a lot more enjoyable and allows me to do things I may not otherwise be able to do.

And, as others have said, it's a great mental escape/release valve for whatever pent-up emotions you may have. I jam some screamy screamy music, lift some heavy objects, and it makes me feel a lot better.
