I don't even know if this is a serious response. Really?

Well are you trying to say that the numbers are comparable?

All of the drills in the world are not 100% guaranteed. Bulletproof glass on the classroom door windows, and all ground level windows would be a start. An armed LEO is really one of the best solutions, IMHO, as it eliminates the complications from allowing teachers to carry, and the presence of a trained officer is often enough to deter someone even as crazed as this shooter was from entering the premises.

We've done numerous lockdown procedures (just did one in October), but I still felt a bit uneasy based on the lack of the above safety provisions.

I could add more, but I'll keep it short. This is just my perspective as an educator.

What about keyless locks? An online registration when you are going to come and visit? No one can come into a school without a key card or let in my the school Leo.

Keep the background DB up to date, and hook to mental health hospitals and emergency rooms, so we can red flag a person. Law enforcement or a doctor can clear the red flag.

Our building has been keyless for longer than I've been there. You also have to be buzzed in by the secretary, and we have nearly 100 high end security cameras on the campus. None of that matters if someone shoots out a window (lime this kid did), and storms the place. It's a start, but not as effective as having an armed officer in place in my opinion.

Williamsport school district, which if you were from here, you would know how likely this school would be to have a shooting, has law enforcement officers on patrol heavy in the morning upon student arrival and afternoons during departure along with, I believe, one officer on campus fulltime. Never been a shooting, yet. *knock on wood*

    Good points.

My wife's school has a local Leo, but anybody can just walk in.

My school is like you have mentioned with the key less entry's, buzzed in, LEO on campus all day. We do drills and talk about this stuff every so often, I believe the worst thing is the mentality of 'it'll never happen here' which is scary.

My daughters school had a school shooting years ago. Granted it was in the high school facility not the elementary it still weighed on our mind when we looked at the school for possible enrollment. As part of the process they go over their seccurity procedures and what not. Locked doors after school starts, radio communications, video surveillance, and some other things. It is better than nothing I guess but in reality could not prevent even a mildly motivated psychopath from gaining entry and causing chaos. They wanted us to feel safe and I appreciated that but I am also smart enough to know it can only help so much.

Hate to have our schools like airport security but if you have a nut job that wants to die and take a lot of people with him any security could be worked around.

And the $1,000,000 question is: "Where was dad?" As fathers go, so go the children.

My understanding is yes. I have a niece with Asbergers and its quite an interesting condition. I know at times, she has a "disconnect" with a lot of things going on around her. A gun would be the last thing I would want in her hands.

I know I've been reading and hearing a lot of complaining from people, not here, but in general, about the security of schools. They say they don't want their kids to have to go through metal detectors everyday, being under constant "military" like surveillance, etc. I say if my kid comes home from school every day safe, its fine by me.

I think discreet carrying security guards in school would be a good idea.

I also think that some gun laws need to be looked at. ALL guns should be required to have a trigger lock and be locked in some form of a safe. That alone may have prevented this latest tragedy. I think the police should have the right to randomly stop by and inspect your guns and how you have them stored. As I said before, if you have nothing to hide, why should something like that bother you? If it helps ensure every gun on my street is secure and the chance of someone steeling it and harming myself, family and friends, go for it. I am not saying take away our guns, I'm saying make sure they are stored securely.

When my kids were born, I went out and purchased trigger locks for all of my guns. They're in a gun safe, but I wanted the locks as well. The chances of my guns being used for anything but what they are intended for are very slim.

because if an intruder is in your house, you have time to unlock a gun safe?

Seriously? And what if your storage methods aren't up to the government's standards?

This is what I fear most, big brother making sure I do things right, Just what good is a gun locked in a gun safe with a trigger lock on it when some nut job is kicking in your front door.
If you can't handle fire arms don't buy any!
That approach will be as ineffective with your kids and weed as is with guns, lock your weed up with your guns cause they will never find any of either on the streets.

This. All of my hunting rifles are stored away safely. My, loaded, Glock 23 sits next to the bed.

Being smart about something can coincide with being prepared when handled correctly.

    This is a joke right?

I agree with the Asbergers being difficult AND the armed security guards.

This has been a bit frustrating few days. There's lots of reaction and "solutions" being offered up by just about everyone. Some of those solutions have merit, some are completely absurd, but people mean well and are trying. The frustrating part is that most of the best solutions have logisitical barriers for implementation. So my worry is that far less effective "solutions" will be the ones chosen to implement to correct the chances of these tragedies happening again, but they will be pathetically ineffective at stopping them.
