Just passed this guy at ten yards. They are moving this morning. Just need one of my shooters to step out. Gonna give it another thirty minutes then i’m gonna go track the doe and get her taken care of.

My son just shot a nice one. Shot was a tad back but mid body. Should be back of lungs/liver. Don’t think he’s going too far. Unfortunately ran onto the one neighbors that can be a bit iffy but I’m hoping he’s dead just over the property line.

Heading out about noon. That’ll be 3.5 hours from the shot. Pics attached where I believe the deer was hit and the blood we had looked fairly good. Fingers crossed.

Proud dad moment! Shot was even better than I thought. Stiff as a board. Went about 100-125 yards and piled up. Sorry the points won’t be the team’s, but what a memory for my son’s first bow buck!

Thanks guys. I know it’s just a fun contest, but at the same time, 140 points for the team would’ve been real nice, especially after I passed that nice buck early this season, but sitting the past two weeks with my son has been awesome. My boys have both duck hunted and gun deer hunted for the past several years but hadn’t showed interest in bow hunting until my middle son did this year. I spent an arm and a leg on decent boots and camo for both boys so they could sit in colder weather. My older son has had to work most weekends so it hasn’t worked out to hunt with him, but Harrison and I have a lot of hours logged and he’s been a sponge absorbing my knowledge on wind direction, stand selection, ethical shots, etc. Well it all paid off and is something I’ll cherish forever.

It was a great sit this morning. Had a bunch of 1.5 and 2.5 year old bucks chasing doe all morning. My son had some shots on some of them, but elected to pass. Things had settled down a little bit but I told my son that during the rut, there is usually a lot of mid to late morning activity so just be ready. Lo and behold, the 8th different buck of the morning was quickly sneaking up behind us. “Harrison! Shooter! Coming! Get ready!” We were debating switching positions in the blind, but didn’t have time. He set up the shooting stick quickly, aimed out my window, and whispered “I’m ready. Dad, stop him!”

Meeeeehhh! Didn’t stop. Meeeeeeeeeehhhhh!!! Stopped and offered the perfect broadside shot at 27 yards. He was ready and sent the bolt and we both saw that it hit pretty true. The shaking ensued along with some high fives, fist bumps, and hugs after we watched him bolt out of sight. I was worried the shot was a touch back, but knew it was definitely going to be lethal. We waited a half hour and got down to check for the bolt and initial blood. The blood looked good at first and was easy to follow for the most part, but did start getting a little spotty right before he crossed the property line so we stopped tracking there and went up to the house. I got a hold of the neighbor and he was very gracious to let us look for the deer as long as it was just tracking it through the CRP, which I explained was where he was headed. We headed back out over 3 hours post shot and picked up the blood trail fairly quickly in the CRP grass. He was spraying good and I became very confident it wouldn’t be far and indeed it wasn’t. He was stiff as a board and had died after the death run, but better safe than sorry. The shot was much better than placement than I had initially thought. He center punched both lungs and even took a nice slice out of the heart.

Anyway, I’ll keep at it although I’m not sure I want to shoot another buck. I will guarantee a doe yet at some point and will have to monitor what I get on camera if a new buck moves in. I will likely hunt through end of January, but this season has been a great success with my brother shooting the giant and now my son getting a really nice buck as well. He green scored 140 6/8” as a mainframe 8 with two tiny stickers so even bigger than I thought he was initially.

Anyway, that’s the story and I’m certainly not done yet!

Not a lot from yesterday sit. I feel today will be about the same. Had huge temperature drop but the wind is 15-20mph all day. On paper Monday is looking amazing temp down to 22f and not getting above 32f with wind at 9mph (still a little high but that’s after 48hrs of 15-20mph). Good luck everyone!!
