I remember, a long time ago, I was 17 years old and I shoot my first monster buck (Nice 12 pointer). I was so excited that I was screaming when I found him. A matter of fact I yelled so loud that a guy hunting nearby thought perhaps someone was in trouble. He got out of his stand and started heading my way. And when he saw what I had shot he realized why this kid was screaming. Thankfully he showed up, because I wasn’t able to drag that buck down the hill. The Buck weighed 225 field dressed. To get to my point, after we were able to get it down to my trail he asked me if he could have the ball’s? I thought it weird at the time, and so I asked him if he was going to eat them or something. His reply, I’m going to hang them next to my stand for the scent. Next day, he shot a nice 10 pointer sniffing those balls as they hung from the branch in front of his stand. I guess it works. lol
Definately a Wisconsin thing. I have done it as has my son. Like Dan said we do not tie them jut hang in a tree or sapling.
Every buck I've shot I've done this to. Usually its on a branch, but a fence has also been used. Not sure why I do it either, but its what I was told to do by my father when I started hunting so needless to say the tradition continues.
Grew up doing it in Wisconsin, havnt had the opportunity to do it in a while, hope this year. I'm kind of surprised its only a Wisconsin thing, I thought all hunters did it. I guess when you never leave the crazies you never know you are crazy.
That is hilarious!! I grew up hunting in WI and everybody we hunted with did that. Now I live in Iowa and we still do it, but nobody around here had ever heard of doing it and they always say "it is a WI thing". It is fun to watch people try to do it the first time Dan www.stepaheadoutdoor.com
Hmmm I worked the booth at the show this weekend and you were at Jellystone with the wife and kids. Pot calling the kettle black ? ?
Thanks again Pat I appreciated it, but my daughter is still complaining that you slept with her American Girl doll.
I saw an old timer on tv cutting up buck nuts and marinating them in some chemicals,he claimed to be the bestbuck lure in the world!!>??<>
Growing up and even now our family does the shoulder toss on bucks and bear (boars). Must be some what of a Mn thing too.
