If I ever have to talk about some stranger athlete as if I actually give a crap about him to sound interesting, please shoot me. Seriously, I have been in business for 22 years and have never once needed to talk about sports to have a meaningful converstation. Those people may be more interesting to you, but they are equally boring to others. Why would I need to know who is going in the first round of the draft to be interesting? We have all been around those guys that still live their "glory days" out vicariously through college or professional athletics. I feel sad for them that their best days are behind them, but they continue to bring them up. I just want to slap them and tell them to move on with their life, nobody cares anymore. Everyone else has moved on.

Id like to shoot you now. ;)

I never said I needed it. But it is better to know, than not to know.

I also said inside and outside of sports. World news, politics, etc...it's the same thing. The more I know, the better, more intellectual conversations (unlike this one) I can have with people. Believe it or not, holding conversations is a critical business capability.

And there is not one thing wrong with admitting to someone that you dont have the time or interest to follow sports. Especially in the business world. I have yet to hear two people have a conversation about sports that I would call intellectual. Quite often, it is just the opposite. Difference of opinions, and thats what makes the world go round. There are plenty of people out there that could not care less about bowhunting either, but I have no problem starting a conversation with them. There are plenty of ways to open conversation and sound intelligent outside of sports topics, especially in the business world.

Fletch, I have no issue with you and think you are well informed on most, if not all topics that cross this board, but you're opinions in this tread makes you sound as if you were often last pick, even though that is not the case.

I have read your golfing ability etc...and think you may like to play sports, just not talk them and thats cool. Some of us like them, same as hunting. Baseball afforded me the ability to get a Juco and then D-1 scholorship. I have only been out of the game a couple years now. I spent 80% of my years playing something, so that would obviously dominate my conversation alot of the time. I agree we should all be well rounded in business. I can tell you this, I am a plant manager for a corp who usually adds another 10 years to my age before promoting to this level. I enter some pretty intimidating meetings with some old heads, and more often than not...sports breaks the ice.

I know this is not personal, so please don't take it that way, but sports are no different than sitting around a forum discussing when piss will start to work to shoot an animal over a dirt area where they pee and doo doo to attract a mate.

That's the way I see it. It's more of a way of life than anything. I've been involved in sports since I could walk. Like hunting, it's something that is passed down from generation to generation (at least in my family). I've played every sport known to mankind and now I enjoy watching my kids do the same. I watch games, sportscenter, etc.... because it has been and will always be an interest of mine. Not reliving my glory days, but simply keeping up with things I've been passionate about my entire life. I like to keep up with who's doing what, what team is doing what, trade deadlines, stats, standings, etc... Kind of like a never ending sitcom. Does anything that happens in sports effect me personally? no. But it interests me and more of a hobby now (except golf.... more of a living)

I can see where I might come across sounding that way, for that I apologize. I actually still play tennis, have won many golf tournaments, cycle (rode 25 miles this morning before 7am), coach baseball, played rec-league basketball until I was about 40, run, lift, etc, etc,,,.....but I just have no interest in watching much of it on TV or sitting around discussing it. I dont have a chip on my shoulder about it, just isnt my thing. My son is going to college on scholarship to race at a D1 cycling program. I can have a somewhat intelligent coversation about road bike racing, but not many people really know much about it beyond knowing about the Tour de France. Following sports is just one more thing we have the option to fill our free time with and some do, some dont. We are blessed to have that option. I do want to thank you for your very kind and intelligent response. It is obvious that you are a man of good character and I wish you the best in everything you do, including your passion for sports!:)

I have NO problem with anyone that lives and breathes sports, none. I did so for a long time in my life, but it was mostly internalized. My father is a huge sports fan and knows a ton. He is 65 years old and still goes to the Texas State track and field championships just to root on the competitors because he loves it. I am sure my sports interests will pick up as my children make their way to highschool. My wife is more of a jock these days than I am...way more. I can already see my 9 year old daughter making a big impression in the soccer realm, she is that good already. But for some reason I look at professional sports and don't feel any passion towards it minus the Redskins on Sundays.

    I watch Sportsenter everyday.

And then I listen to ESPN radio all day long, everyday.

I like sports. I do not trust people who say that do not like sports. Those people are usually pretty weird and lame. This thread kinda proves that theory.

Well said. If one muddles through a rather bland and unexceptional existance, its not uncommon to live vicariously through the accomplishments of others such as paid athletes or sports teams or hunting show characters to fill that void. If yours is a life rich with activity, hobby, purpose and substance you may be less apt to devote great portions of your life to the accomplishment of others because you will be too busy and won’t have seek out others to entertain you. Just sayin.

That said, I see no harm with a little “escapism” so long as it does not go over board such as saying (or thinking) you are a part of or attached to the team. I see and hear people talking about how “we” beat you or “we” are better than you and your team or the desire to know everything about the players right down to their personal life. This is where the term “fan” (Fanatic) comes from. Those folks would do well to get a grip. You can’t suspend reality at that level very long and will actually have to accomplish something of your own. For my tastes, I have no interest in these games and those playing them at any level. (especially at the millionaire level)

I will start watching it again once the NFL starts reporting to training camp. Watching ESPN when the only sport they can talk about is baseball, is painful to watch. They grab onto any little piece of new information and beat it to death, no matter how small or insignificant. Kinda like the cable news networks.

I have no idea what you're talking about, now. I never said any of those things, or disagreed with them.
