We read, watch, listen to lots of talk and advice on "mature bucks". It's what sells for sure and most of us want to kill big bucks or at least be opportunistic. But I got to admit, the long nose nanny and especially if she has her fawns with her has my utmost respect. That can be one difficult deer to kill. It's hard to kill a mature buck but they do get stupid sometimes in the rut and let their guard down. that old nanny doesn't let her guard down no matter what. she's always sniffing, bobbing her head, stomping, and of course that sickening blow when she got ya ass. Hats off to her old girl!
Old nanny does have busted me more times than the bucks have I think, Those sharp eyed old bats don't miss much in their woods.
I remember two years in a row there was a big group of does. There was a nanny doe that just had us pegged. It didn't matter if we moved our stand when she entered that area she would start trying to peg us. I was on a mission for two years to kill her but was unsuccessful. I just tipped my hat to her and she won the fight.
I was once mocked for suggesting if busted by the old nanny on a small plot of land, abandon that stand site because the old nanny is now hunting you. Leave the stand and put up another and watch that old doe as she approaches.
It seemed so true on that property. If her group of does came in I didn't have a chance. She would let them graze and just stare at me. If I moved she would start blowing and they would all run out.
I even stuffed a set of camo and put it in a stand on a busted stand to push deer to another stand on the food plot. Still hard to get a shot.
