I'm a big fan of carbon. I feel that carbon of the same weight packs more punch than than of an equally weight aluminum. Now carbons a generally lighter but there are ways around that. I'm currently shooting Beman MFX MAX-4 shafts in a 500 spine cut to 28.5". I have 75 grains of insert and I'm shooting 175 grain heads. My total arrow weight is about 540 grains. I'm shooting them out of a reflex/deflex long bow that is 48# at my 26" draw. I also have some 30" XX75 2016s with 145 grain heads and they also come in around 540 grains. When shooting the two side by side, the difference in penetration is plain as day. The Bemans out penetrate the XX75s all day long.

I've shot the FMJs from my compounds for the past couple seasons and I couldn't be happier. The are very tough. You really have to try to get them to bend and they are quieter than aluminums. I'd be shooting them of my trad bows too but I got a screaming deal on these Beman MFXs.

Why do you think that is happening?

I believe it is a combo of the carbons being smaller in diameter and I think the carbon recovers faster due to absorbing the energy more efficiently than aluminum. I can't say that is fact but that's what I've come up with. I've seen the same with my compounds. The media I shoot into doesn't seem to matter either. Whether it's hay bales, bag targets, or foam the carbon arrows always penetrate more.

So even though the carbons and the aluminum arrows weigh the same, you think the carbon arrows are shooting faster? I really don't know the answer to that question. I have no idea.

I'm not sure that they fly faster. I think they just recover from paradox faster but like I said I really don't know. I just see the results when I'm shooting.
