I've been having a blast but I'd have more fun if I had a decent shot at a shooter. I've started to rattle lately and I've seen some success. Thursday morning I rattled in a shooter but the wind shifted. He was at 35 yards but behind a couple small trees. Friday night I hunted public land near my parents house and had this guy at 22.5 yards for about 3-4 minutes. He's also the buck I witnessed snort wheeze once a doe came into the picture. I actually got the snort wheeze on video but you can barely make it out. Enjoy the pics...I'm hoping to lay a big one down soon and I sure hope passing on these smaller bucks pays off for me.
Thanks guys. Aaron....it was starting to get very tempting. He was standing in front of me (broadside) for what seemed like forever.
Great pictures !! Sounds like you are going about it right . Hopefully you are rewarded with a great buck !! Tim
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that almost questions passing up small bucks. While that buck isn't really too small, he'll be a lot bigger next year (or so you can hope). I would pass that buck up this year too, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't regret it from time to time either.
I've been passing them that size and bigger right up to around 120-125" for about 5 yrs. now, Mainly because you have to let them grow if you want them big. I've only shot at one buck in that time, killed a BUNCH of does, but I have no regrets. If I'd filled my tag early on something like that buck above, then while hunting the rest of the season had to pass on something in the 150" range, I'd have kicked myself in the arse repeatedly. Kill a nice 140" and have to pass on a 150" wouldn't feel quite as bad. We only get ONE buck here, so if I'm gonna shoot one, I'm gonna make him worth my while. We can kill 5 does, but only one buck. I kill my share of does, but keep watching the young bucks until the big one comes along. Finch, Beautiful country and great pic's, keep at it, you're gonna be rewarded!!!
Nice pics. If your ever short on food just shoot one of those black deer in the last pic. You'll be good for a while
Thanks guys! Yes sir, I have never been to Pound or Grundy but I know about where they're located. The last pic is of House Mountain in Lexington (where Mr. Robert E. Lee & Stonewall Jackson are buried )
