With all this baseball talk, thought I would share. My son,as many of you know is a baseball player He was invited to go to the high school to work out with the baseball team.He is in the 7th grade and can try out for the team(freshman most likely) this winter. This is an unofficial workout and there are no coaches involved with them.Just high school players hitting and doing drills. He is well known by most of the players from camps and his sister is the same age as they are. I didn't let him play fall ball this year because I wanted him to take a break from it.So I put him in a basketball league but he is lacking the passion he once had for it.I made mention of this baseball workout and his eyes lit up and said he wanted to go. So he went tonight and got a taste of -3 bats and I was impressed with how little transition there was for him.(good swing makes it easier) I had a hard time getting him to leave, even after an hour and a half. Just thought I would share. Any thoughts from some of you baseball guys.
Good for him. As long as he has the passion and desire, cut him loose. Just make sure he keeps everything in perspective.
Baseball is one of those sports that you can learn a LOT, simply by being around more advanced players. Good for him.
I agree totally and I like that the coaches are not coaching. It is players developing their skills without being pushed. I watched for about 15 minutes before I made him leave.I noticed he made a few minor tweaks to his loading and timing mechanisms and then I watched a few other older players, and he was doing exactly what they were doing.
And, he always will!....lol Sounds great. The exposure he's getting with the older players is awesome.
The ironic thing is,it is the exact tweaks I have been trying to get him to make but watching does more than listening in this case.Of course listening to dad always comes with resistance. BUT,the same thing can happen on the flip side.I have fought many times during rec ball for him to keep HIS swing and not drift toward what the others are doing because what he is doing works better. I remember 1 coach telling me how much he liked having my son on the team because the other kids were watching him and learning. He made teaching how to run bases easier for this coach just by him doing it. Now it is his time to watch. I just hope it stays fun for him.
Baserunning is an artform. It's one of those things in baseball that can be learned (to an extent). But, the best at it are so much better than the other guys that it seems instinctive to them. They don't even realize how good they are. Every team has 1-2 guys who are head and shoulders above the others. And, everyone on the team knows who they are (and respect them for it). It really is a gift. Exciting times, for sure (for you). Enjoy it.
