I have a LW sit and climb with the extra foot rests. The worst part of sitting in it is waking up and wondering what I missed…… Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
It depends on the spot I plan to sit. If its between bedding areas, I will sit them all day from the Halloween on when I go in there. I relish the all day sits to be honest. I've killed plenty of good bucks in that 11-2 range to keep doing it. This year in the saddle will be interesting if I can pull it off. I'm super comfy in my saddle now but its a different kind of sit than in a stand. Time will tell.
Also, an all day hunt doesn't mean you have to sit in one stand location all day. If you need to get down and move locations, then do it. Get close to the action if you see it, or just change up the scenery for your mental.
I use a Alpha II and 4 Skeletor sticks and a 2 step aider. Climbers are comfortable thats for sure, I wish I could use 'em more but I'd lose many of the locations I'm in if a climber is all I have .. as of now, thurs for all day is a go wind wise ..
This is something I must get better at. I"m stuck in my ways and will sit the stand even though I know I should relocate quick at times. I have been in stands and watched buck after buck in the stance walk down a particular path or work along some edge/transition and won't budge. I'm always thinking I need to wait it out because the action might end up under me at some point that day. Not to sound like a homer, but I've really went all in and subscribed to the "beast style" of hunting that Dan Infalt pushes on the Hunting Beast. It does require me to be far more aggressive than I'm comfortable with. But, so far, its been a ton of fun and I've been getting the hang of moving in close to deer that I would have otherwise sat back and never even had an opportunity on. It really reminds me of being a kid learning how to hunt again or "just going for it". I'm making a lot of mistakes, but I'm also learning a lot about mountain deer that I otherwise would not learn without spending years there.
Being aggressive works especially when you know the layout of your property, and have learned how deer travel the property consecutively from year to year.
Monday will begin my first all day sit of the season. There is nothing better than rutting deer activity all day long! That being said 4 of 5 or 9 of 10 or more of my all day sits are just a test of willpower. They can be so boring…..but when you get it right…it’s magic. Saw a bunch of does in the morning. They were moving for hours. Temps rose and didn't see anything after 1030am.
I’ve never taken a rut vacation but am next week. Will try to do a few full day sits. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
back to work Sunday(12 hr shift), then Vac.#2 starts this coming Fri. .. no luck this past thurs and today, wind has been stuck on easterlies .. I'll sit tomorrow Sat. AM and thats it for vac. #1 .. ...
My back can’t take it but if yours can and it’s close to rut or during rut it will pay off for you I promise. So many times during that time of year I get camera notification of a buck that will be in front of my stand right before I’m about to walk in to start the afternoon hunt or while I’m taking a nap mid day. Had I stayed in the stand from the morning hunt I may could have gotten the shot.
did have a 2.5 yr old 9pt come thru this morning , with my 2nd vac. coming all I did was watch, not a bad deer for this state land, there are 'some' better .. looks to be a warm start for vac 2 next Fri. 4th ( ..shows 70's from Fri. thru the weekend) .. back to work now for 5 loooong days ... btw, never did do an all dayer this time around ( to damn warm), most sits were 4-6 hrs, either AM or PM... set stand/sticks and hunt the afternoon, leave it and go back the next AM if the wind stays good ..
I am a big fan of all day sits in November. 99% of the time they are from my summit climber, with hang ons and saddles I have to get down at some point and move or just walk around. To be honest most of the time I am doing all day sits they are when I am hunting out of state. There's something about being in the woods in November, watching the sun rise and then set all from the same tree with the anticipation that it could happen at any second. Some days can be long but all in all, not much I would rather be doing. We used to start them on our Ohio hunt starting around Halloween the whole way through to hunting 3 days of Indiana's gun season. Slow years, you really got a lot figured out about yourself and whatever else was on your mind. I don't really recall what I did before I had a smart phone, never was one to take a book or anything in. I do find it more challenging when I am hunting at home in PA, I seem to have other responsibilities tugging at me which seems to break my focus and in turn break me... when I am out of state there's nothing else to do but grind it out. The only thing that sometimes got old was having only an hour or two to interact with your buddies each day. We would get back to the hotel, eat our food from the crockpot, have a few beers and be out cold in no time. I would definitely say they are worth every minute, but I just don't do the weeks long hauls anymore. We design our rut trips for 3-4 day bursts now which I like a lot more. That being said, circumstances have lead me to be out of state this year potentially from 10-31 to 11-12... mentally preparing for the grind as I type this.
I don't get to hunt as many days as I'd like the end of October and beginning of November so almost every sit that time are all day sits for me. I'm on day 3 in a row right now. The last 2 days I didn't have much internet service so that makes it harder mid day.
Tomorrow im.getting up at 930am and hunting until dark. Rain ends about 10am or so. Conditions look good for deer movement. Overcast. Nw winds.
