Is there a better time of the year to plant alfalfa? I tried planting it a few years ago in the spring and it didn't do much wondering if I had planted in the fall it would have come in thicker?

Pull a soil test. You need a pH over 6.0 . If your pH is low, you need to get calcium down about 6 months in advance. Spring seeding alfalfa can work, but use a nurse crop or if your straight seeding, you can either put a preemerge herbicide down or spray over the top for grasses with a grass killer.

Plant an inoculated alfalfa that has a high germ count and if it also contains a growth promoter on it, even better. For fall seeding, use an alfalfa that doesn't go dormant too fast.

I do plan on doing soil tests in the spring, then again the ground isn't frozen yet I may dig thru the snow to grab some samples
