WELL I WAS HUNTING IN ONE OF MY BEST SPOTS ON THURSDAY AND I SAW A ALBINO DOE BEDDED IN THE TIMBER. I HAD NEVER SEEN ONE IN THE WILD SO IT WAS A FIRST FOR ME I GRABBED THE BINOS AND COULDNT BELIEVE IT. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I HEAR SOMETHING CRASHING DOWN THE RIDGE AND HERE COMES A 160 INCH. 10 PT. RUNNIN AT HER SHE JUMPS UP AND SCOOTS THRU THE BRUSH. SO I GRABBED THE CAMERA INSTEAD OF THE BOW AND STARTED TAKING PICS I THOUGHT I MIGHT WITNESS HIM BREED HER. BUT I DIDNT, BUT I HAVE HUNTED THIS SPOT FOR 5YRS, AND NEVER SEEN HER BEFORE SO I WANNA KNOW JUST HOW RARE IS IT TO ACTUALLY SEE ONE OF THESE . AND OF ALL PLACES IN THE WESTERN SUBURBS OF CHICAGO ..............
I have never seen one & hate 2 admit I don't know the law in IL about shooting em' either...or lack there of a law
There's a young albino buck down by Clinton IL that I saw last year. It's the first one I've seen. Isaiah, all white deer are illegal to shoot in IL.
since albinism and melanism are genetic mutations that cannot and donot benifit the herd, can somebody please explain to me how it is or maybe why it is illegal to kill them? makes no sense
I've seen a few albino deer around where I live. I'm not really sure why it is illegal to kill them caveman, but I definitely understand what you're saying. Are the mutations that they carry detrimental to the herd, or does it have any effect at all? I'm not overly educated on the issue, but I know it is pretty easy to get around the "albino" part by saying that there was coloration on it that made it a piebald. It was a controversial issue here a few years ago where an albino deer was shot and a lot of people were upset about it. The deer had some brown spots that had been stained by the tarsal glands, so he shot it.
Albinos are different and easy to spot so the non-hunting public gets kind of attached to them. The albino buck at Clinton sure has gotten a lot of attention from non-hunters. I think that's the only reason they're protected. It's emotional not science based.
Well put my friend. And Christine is correct - albino deer are illegal to shoot in IL however Piebald deer are not. Explain that logic to me!
I heard a story about albinos being sacred to some indian tribes. Possibly another reason they cant be killed. This may be just a story.. i have no facts.
Pieblads are legal game in Oklahoma. I think a lot of people get piebald and albino mixed around quite frequently. Like anybody who sees a white deer automatically says albino without to much examination. I took a piebald buck last year that I had watched for over 3 years as well as three other piebald does that still roam this place. Every year some person will catch me at the gate and say they had seen albino deer on my place and they are ancient native American warrior spirits come back to roam the plains. And every time I told another commonly found native American here in Oklahoma that, they almost kill themselves with laughter. Funny thing, its always some crusty old white hippy or new age hipster yoga ding dong who would tell me about native American lore..
Not illegal in Oklahoma to shoot piebald. Pretty sure our coyote and hog population would eliminate any true albinos pretty quick. I've only heard of one true albino in Oklahoma and that was at Honey Hill deer farm.
Holy crap, I think I must have touched the last page and saw this. Dec. 2008. And here I thought this was a new post. Whoops
