It's that time of the year again. Lent and thus Fish Fry season here in Wisconsin. The tradition dates back to the strong German/Catholic people that settled here. Well during Lent most Catholics would go out and eat fish at their local restaurant or bar. This tradition has been adopted by the entire state's population as the "thing to do" on a Friday night during Lent whether you are religious or not. In fact, it is so popular that most fish fry's run year round now. Of course it peaks during the next month or so. I'm not Catholic but I love fish fry's just like everyone else here. The babysitter just arrived and my wife and I are ready to battle the masses to enjoy a fish fry tonight for the first Friday during Lent. Here are some of the dishes you can expect. If you visit our great state I strongly suggest finding a small town bar and have a Wisconsin Fish Fry.
It is a great tradition, but I have a hard time going out and ordering fish at a restaurant since I have owned a fishing resort. I was going to fry up some crappies and bluegills that I caught this winter, but am boiling some Northern instead. Enjoy tonight Brad! Oh, and have a beer for me!
I can't stand eating fish at a restraunt. I'll eat home cooked fish any day of the week over that. Speaking of fish fry's, we've got smelt fry's going on here In the area right now. Thats some good stuff right there!!
Steve I haven;t had smelt in years, we used to catch them through the ice on lake erie, just tie a short line on both index fingers and catchem by the hundreds. They seem to go hand in hand with Labatts Blue.
Man, that sounds like fun!! Never have fished for them as there Isn't a lake close that has them around here. Good times I bet there Jim, good times!!
Now I'm thinking of running up to the bay and catch me a batch, its only about 20 miles from here and hell I already have the beer.
Last night was spectacular. We had a great time and the Fish Fry was delicious. Went to a couple of bars afterwords caught up on all the things we never get to discuss with the kids around.
