I am sure this has been discussed to death, but only now is it relivant to me. This year, Nov. 6th, and Nov.9th, I arrowed two bucks, both 7's. Really unattractive racks, but huge deer. My neighbor came over to see them and told me he was sure one would have went about 200 lbs., one slightly less. He then told me that is huge for a year and a half deer. I told him I doubted his age at 1 1/2. Both deer have a lot of grey around the eyes and muzzle area, and the one looked like he swallowed a barrel. My neighbor said you should have these aged. I live in flint, Mi., and would like to know where I would go to get this done I also know it is done by teeth, and I have seen diagrams, but they all look the same to me. I am going to butcher the big one today, so if I take only the heads, don't I have to be sure to have the tags on the antlers to transfer.? Oh yeah, both double lung, neither went more than 50yds, and one came into a decoy, and doe/estrus. The second I shot at 8 feet from my stand with a spitfire, and I thought I was going to get hit with the blood spray. a very exciting year. Best wishes to all my pals. Mike
You should be able to take the heads to any DNR station. They should be able to give you their guess on the age. Make sure you have that tag on those antlers if you take them there. Do you have any pictures of the deer? I dont live all that far from the Flint area. I am one County west of there. What part of Flint are you from?
I am actually in Davison. I generally say Flint, so it will narrow the area down. I do have some pics and will try to post, again, not very good racks, kind of basket racks. But I will try, (means I will have my wife do it) Good luck Dave. Maybe a day or two
deer age tools Martin congratulations on your deer We have had several discussions about deer age over the last 30 years of bow hunting. I finally went and bought a deer ageing tool and most deer here in Ky are only 1.5 to 2.5 years old. I had a buck that scored 132" as an 8 point and was only 2.5 years old. I got one this year that was 5.5 years old. 265lbs on the hoof and a small 10 point rack that had broke off 4 points. It takes time to grow a big rack, but not all older mature deer grow big racks.
