I shot this buck last year. He was my second buck with a bow, and I'm quite proud of him. Nobody knows what to make of his age. He has a long nose, and funky rack. He seems to be a fairly mature deer to me, but I'm not sure. I've Heard people say that you can tell a deers age by their teeth, and I've heard others say that you cannot. His teeth look young, but it could depend on what he ate and other things. He is a suburban deer, so they all eat pretty much the same things. He has 13 points. What do you guys think. My guess is 3 1/2.
Well judging by the teeth and the research i've done on aging deer by teeth this one looks like maybe a 2.5 year old. The dentine is still fairly thin, and the crests are still mostly there. As they age and the teeth wear, more dentine (the sort of faded brown looking streaks) will appear to be thicker than the enamel (the white parts) and the crests on the teeth will wear down to dull little nubs.
That thin face makes me think 2.5. Usually their faces start to look more like a football by 3.5. Teeth look young too. J.m.o
