I got a pull today and I am curious to how old you guys think this buck is. And yes it is a buck. Ill show the same pic with horns after a bit
Looks < 2 1/2 to me, maybe 1 1/2, based on the thin neck, but I'd want a good look at the brisket and belly to confirm.
Necks are skinny at this point anyway but that rump looks too pointy and sharp to be a very old deer, makes me think I would agree with the 2.5. He does almost look too stocky in the belly and chest for a 2.5 though...with this being the only pic I'm going to say 3.5 based on the weight in his belly and front half. Front legs look too thick for a really young deer also...yep, going for 3.5

When i get home tonight I'll post the picture of him with horns and see if any of you change your mind Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Antlers are a poor means to age a deer by anyway. A close second is a pic of pre-rut deer early in the summer.
Sure, I get it. All I'm saying is that I will still stick with my guess because I don't base it on the antlers. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if it's a doe because I can't make a positive identification of gender from that pic other than to take your word that it is indeed a buck and by an assumption that the scrubbed portion actually had antlers there to start with. Which would be funny as hell TBPH.
One thing I was thinking about is wouldn't a 3.5 this fall be the same size right now as a 2.5 from last year? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
No. They don't just grow during one week or month of the year. 6 months growth on a young deer would make quite a difference. Especially during their peak growth years. Edit: Not sure I understood your question. Maybe this will clear it up. The deer right now are 1,2,3, etc. because they were born in June typically. So, in the Fall is when we add the 1/2. So last Fall's 2 1/2 year old is now 3 and will be 3 1/2 this season. Maybe that is what you were meaning?
Well more like a 2 1/2 deer last fall lost a lot of weight over winter, so in the spring a buck that will be 3 1/2 is just gained the weight he lost last winter, so he is at ground zero with respect to his suez last fall then this b Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Summer he will put on more weight to reach his 3.5 size by fall. Basically saying if you looked at pics of a 2.5 from last fall and that same deer now in would think they would look the same size Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I don't really think so. At that young of an age, they should still be putting on some muscle and only lose some fat reserve during the worst part of winter. At least around here, they still find plenty to eat during the winter. I suppose each deer and different regions could vary.
I can post the same picture of that buck later but here is a close up of the same buck. Does this change some of your guys mind that voted 1 1/2? I thought it was a super small body as well that's why I named him baby Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
