I'm not sure Mike or I have a place to weigh a deer that big, but we'll do our best. Assuming one of us kills him, of course.
Take a scale and pulley to the kill sight. Then hoist him up on a tree branch. You might have to cut that beast I half to get him out. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
Well I saw this fat bastard this morning - problem is it was an hour before shooting light. He was standing 20 yards from my stand as I was walking in. We had a little bit of a staring contest since he was blinded by my evil white headlamp at the time. Eventually he walked away, never to be seen again. I will admit, I did have a smidgeon of fear that he would charge and throw me in the air like some moron at the running of the bulls.
Didn't you have a FAT BIG buck named Perry after william perry? How do you compare this deer to that one?
Justin (looking up at Mike): How far to the truck? Mike (looks down at app on phone): About 127 yards... Justin (looks down at the fat bastard...): So quarter him out? Mike (hands Justin a knife)... LMAO
Haha, he's definitely going to need a team to get that thing out! I would love to shoot a live weight 300 lbs buck in my life time. That buck looks like he might make that. Can't wait to hear how this story unfolds. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
Yeah, I called him The Fridge. He was a 4-year-old and one of the bigger-bodied deer we had seen then. But he's nothing compared to this cow. That's what age will do for a deer when they put all of its growth into its body and not a rack.
Well, nobody killed this guy last year, and he's back for year #8! Pretty incredible he's been able to make it this long without getting killed. He's defied the odds for sure, but his luck has to run out eventually. I saw him three times last year but just couldn't get him killed.
Wow. What a beast. Hope you catch up with him. Since you have such a history with him has he taught you anything? Did you notice many changes in his patterns, home range area, feeding habits? I have never had more than a few years history with a deer.
The farm he lives on is a very interesting place in that the crop rotation varies extensively from year to year. It's difficult to predict patterns based on food sources until you're in the middle of the season. It's a large dairy farm, and they exclusively plant hay/alfalfa and corn. The hay fields are easy to predict and are the preferred source of food all summer long. So wherever those fields are, he will show up during the summer. The corn fields are a lot more difficult because they harvest about 75% of them for silage in late August, which effectively turns them into dirt. The ones they leave up will be picked usually in October or November, and then those become the preferred source of food from there on out. But, we have no way of knowing which fields will be picked and which will be left until it actually happens. A friend I hunt with has sheds off this deer pretty much every year since he was 2, and they've been found on all ends of the property we hunt - which is probably 800 acres. One year he found the matched sides over a mile from one another. We've also had encounters with him all over the farm through the years. He's been a tough nut to crack, which is likely why he's still alive! One thing I have learned in the last three seasons is that he seems to pick a location to spend his late October afternoons, and he shows up there a lot. He is very killable during that time of year. The trouble is, it doesn't seem to be in the same spot from year to year. So I've spent time chasing him where I think he will be based on last year's trail cam data, and it turns out he's using a different part of the farm I'm assuming either crop rotation, acorns, or possibly what other mature bucks are in, or not in, that area are affecting his movements. Last year by the time I realized he was living in a part of the farm he's not normally in, and I was wasting my time in a spot he wasn't using, it was a bit too late. I had one encounter with him in late October after picking him up several times on camera, but I was stupid and went in on a questionable win, and it didn't work out for me. I should have known better but I pushed my luck and he busted me. Hopefully this year will be different.
Interesting. Crop rotation messes with me where i hunt as well. Sure sounds like a wiley old buck. Hope to see him on an episode this year. Hes lived a long enough life. Good luck.
