So I got a picture of a new buck this week when I pulled a camera card, one I don't think I've seen before. I'm guessing him at 4.5 years old, but think there's a chance he might only be 3.5 years old. Any guesses?? I'm referring the the buck on the left.
It's tough to say, his belly is still pretty straight as well as his back. His neck is also pretty small yet. Could be 3.5 in my estimation. He does have a big ol body on him though. Good looking deer.
The one on the right looks to be at least 4.5 years and I think the one on the left is only a 2.5 he just has a really good set of bones on him.
Man I hope you're right. I'm hoping he makes it through this year. It'd be interesting to see what he does next year.
That would be AWESOME if he was only 2 1/2 but unless he saw the same DR as A Rod I would say he is 3 1/2
A couple key facts that make this deer look like a 2.5 year old is his parallel back and stomach, his legs are long and skinny, and also his rack doesn't have a lot of mass with short brows. A 3.5 year old will start to put the pot belly on. Another thing to remember when looking at a velvet buck is the velvet makes his rack look a lot bigger than it actually is.
His front legs appear to be the same length as the buck on the right and he is thick from top to bottom. He has a small neck but that is expected this time of year.
I think I'm on board with what you're saying. Regardless of exactly how old he actually is I think everyone is in agreement that he has some better years ahead of him if he makes it through.
