I'm not sure if this is the right spot to post this, but I need some expert advice on the age and score of this Minnesota buck. The dates and times on the pictures are correct.
If those are the same deer and being 2 years worth of pictures then I would assume he will be 4.5 this fall and even though I'm not too good at it I would put him in the mid 140 range in the 2014 picture. It's odd that his brows are short/non-existent. He's a nice looking buck either way.
I'm not the best with age but I'm fairly confident that he score mid 140's in the velvet picture. It's hard for me to believe he could three and half years old so I'll have to say four and half. What part of Minnesota are you from? I hunt in the SE near to mower/fillmore county line. I see a lot of bucks with weak brows. It's rare we see any with respectable brows. I'm just curious if it's just my area or a regional thing...
140 is too low, is say he is over 150 he is a main frame 12 with 10" probably 9-10" g2-3-4s. Add in 25" beams(minimum) and your at 105-110 without mass or g5s or brows. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
And I forgot the spread which puts him in the 160s if my figuring is right. 50 for beams, 50 for mass and spread, 60 for tines = 160 and I would not be surprised if he went over that. Heck of a deer Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I thought 160's or better as well and 4.5 to 5.5 yrs old on the velvet buck. and 120's for second buck 3.5-4.5 yrs old
Maybe, but 160s just seems high for a buck with no brow tines. I could be wrong, but I am typically a little conservative on field judging a buck, especially in velvet when they appear to be bigger than when you see antlers in the fall.
Here are a few more angles of the spread, I personally think that he's a 4.5 and would have been in the 160's. His tines looked rounded and not completely done growing in the august picture. That was the last picture I got of him, so who knows what the hard horned mass and tine lengths would have been. I appreciate all of the estimates, and hopefully he shows up this year and I can show you guys some updates! Drivingtacks, I hunt SE MN in houston county and that is the only mature buck that had those little stubs of brows. The mature bucks in my area usually have decent brows, so that is how I know that is the same buck (and the frame).
He looks bigger in these pictures than he did in the first picture in my opinion. Now I can see 160s.
I don't think his G2's are 10 inches, 7 maybe. A deer ear is 6 inches long. If you compare that tine to his ear it's definitely not 10 inches and I think 50 inches for mass is pretty generous. On average a good number to assume for mass is 12 inches per side, since his big I'll give him 15 for 30 total. Looking at the later pictures I think he is maybe 19 inches wide, knowing that a deer with spread ears is 16 inches for ear tip to tip. I still say mid to high 140's and could be convinced at low 150's but 160 is a little high with no brows.
I don't think his g2s are ten either, but the average of g2s 3s and 4s is going to push 9-10". I gave him 60 for tines among 10 tines for an average of 6" per tine to account for small brows. And I didn't give him 50 for just mass that's mass and spread. I gave him 4" per mass measurement which is 32" total and an 18" spread and I think his average mass might go closer to 5. And 50 for beams may be a little short he has 4 on each beam and they aren't packed in too tight Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Either way, that was a year ago, I'd like to see what he looks like this year on your wall! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
