I have come to the conclusion it is a lot of fun! There are a lot of differences in using a compound verses a recurve. One of the striking differences in my mind is that with a compound I could draw prior to my target entering my zone, and then I could literally put the pin on the animal's vitals and shoot immediately. Not so with the recurve. I could have had a couple of dead doe already with the compound but I would not change this experience for anything. I feel like I am really hunting for the first time in many years. OH yeah, dang this 60 inch bow is a pain in the rear when I am twisting and turning around the tree trying to get a shot! hahahaha!
It does sound like fun. Wish you all the best. Maybe one of these years I'll pick up a recurve and try it out.
Little different, huh????.....lol It's a totally different ballgame, once they're in range. You didn't even mention the eyes. They have to be closer, now. Eyes are bigger! Now, you have to draw with them that much closer. Just because a deer is in range (even trad range)......doesn't come anywhere CLOSE to guaranteeing you a shot. I recall hunting with Page, last year, and having a big 'ol doe at 8 yds about 3 different times. NO SHOT. She was perfectly broadside. No shot. I couldn't get drawn. Times that by "several", and I'm with you. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Good luck.
We are going to be all over them this year Sean, from day 1. I will be able to make it out in the afternoon on opening day on Quantico. No am hunting as my kids have soccer. All I need to know is what area is open and what direction the wind is blowing and I will be on my way!
My daughter actually is making noise about wanting to hunt on youth day, and my son is making noise he doesn't... I thought I read on that kids under 12 have to have taken the hunter ed class on Quantico this year, have to ask the folks at the GC. If not there, will hunt the Goldvein property with her. I am taking leave the 4-6th, planning on bell to bell hunts...and will be in a stand 1st thing the 2nd, bell to bell also.
If the 4th-6th is hot, don't worry about hunting all day (unless you want to). Take a mid-day break, grab some hot food/coffee/recharge and re-enter the woods. You are not missing much in the mid-day hunting realm when it is 85 degrees and it is early October.
