Hi guys, I have a friend that's going to Africa on a bow hunt and I'm wondering the steps in shipping the hides back to the U.S. and then to the tannery here in W.I. Thanks Mark
Mark, Your friend's outfitter will help with the shipping and dipping arrangements while the skins are in Africa. For the most part, an exporter will contact your freind when his skins are ready to ship. Your friend will need to make arrangements with an importer here in the States. The importer and the tannery can be one in the same but are usually seperate. Your friend will need to give his importer a power of attorney to act on his behalf. Once the skins/horns, etc. clear US Customs, they will be inspected by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. From there they will move forward to the tannery. The whole process can take up to a year... Have your friend budget about $200 for each animal he shoots. $200 will about cover everything on each side of the pond.
