Many are much more willing to take the chance. Calculated risk and many of them are better off doing this. A 5g deductible weighs the risk more in their favor, but now, they don't have that option.

Not all uninsured are unable to pay. Some are better off financially not purchasing it. He'll probably choose the fine. Which is just more money out of his pocket.

The guy I am talking about lives modestly, no new cars and such. He's not destitute but being forced to pay for something he is better off without just doesn't seem right to me.

Ok, Justin, hear me out. You are paying a pretty high monthly premium for insurance, and the deductible is set so high that most people will never reach the deductible? So you are paying for insurance and not even using it because your paying out of pocket for your healthcare costs everytime you go to the doctor? Are you going to go to the doctor knowing its going to cost you a couple hundred dollars for a visit? Probably not, your just going to deal with your problems without seeking medical help from professionals.

I have to admit, I have great employer sponsored heath insurance. I pay $278 a month for me, and my family. Our deductible varies depending on what type of doctor, but for office visits it's $35. My company's way of fighting the system it to actually have a contracted medical clinic on campus that has no deductible and many prescriptions are free of charge, and most others are very cheap. I'm glad I have such a good employer, and understand that not everyone does, but if you are being told that you have to fork out 500-600 bucks a month, then have a $4000 deductible before the insurance company starts to pay out, I can't imagine this sounds like a good deal to anyone? That just doesn't come off as AFFORDABLE to me.

This is the same type of situation my mom is in. It's not just the deductible that puts it beyond her means, either. The co pay for most things is brutal. Just looking at a single ER visit, we're talking $250 for the ER, $60 for radiology, another $60 or so for labs. If there's an overnight stay, there's another $600 MINIMUM. All of that is in addition to the $400+ premium for that month. That may seem like no big deal to some, but what if you're already living paycheck to paycheck and still barely getting by? The only reason my mom is going to be able to see any benefit from this is because I'M going to be paying the difference in premiums to put her into the top tier of coverage. Not everyone has that option available to them, though.

Look, I work in health care. I would live to see every American getting the best possible care, without wondering if they could pay the bill and still have enough money for food. As far as I can tell, this isn't going to make that happen. I could be wrong, though. In fact, I hope to God that I am.

On a related note, the next person who tries to tell me the "Dream Act" is a great idea is getting punched in the goiter.

Dude, are you high? $5K is less than it would cost for a minor ER visit. The last time I had to take my girlfriend to the ER, she got a $7K bill for it. And that's not even the worst I've seen. God help you if you come into my ER as a major trauma patient. You're going to pay $10K just to come through that door. If we have to take you to the OR... You're going to wish we'd let you die when that bill comes in.

He's right because most don't go to the ER in a year. Hell, most do go to the doctor at all.

I can count on one hand with one finger how many times I visited a doctor in almost 15 yrs of my single adult life. I did not have insurance nor did I have a need for it. If this had taken place then and I was forced to purchase insurance that I didn't need I would be livid. Now once I met my wife and started makin babies clearly I purchased insurance and it has been used. Even with the relatively good insurance I have I am still sometimes amazed when the bills show up. What really gets me are the little ones. Seriously??? Send me a bill for $2.50??? Had to cost more than that to print and mail.. LOL sheesh

What really jerks my chain is when I hear folks on state care talk about havin a baby or other wise and its 100% covered. Yet I pay my monthly premiums plus my deductibles etc, and then my tax $$'s get to pay for thier babies arrival, then will no doubt also pay to feed the baby as well. If you can't afford to pay it on your own without the help of your government then you aren't ready for a child.
Sorry kinda off topic, just a major peave of mine

Health Insurance is not for when you are healthy.

I laughed at this one, because employers have been doing this for years, LOL Now they can just tell their workers we are doing this because of obama care. Cabela's move was to fire you or you can move to part time. They started that move in 2002.

Most people never go to an ER, not to mention every year. He said on an average year and he is right.

We all understand this but it is their responsibility, not mine.

Now we are all paying for all these policy holders, REGARDLESS IF THEY GO TO THE DOCTOR. Now it's a monthly fee.

Where does the extra $1000 come from for the retired couple paying $300 for the $1300 policy?

Atleast before, if they didn't go to the doctor, we didn't have to pay for the uninsured.

Hell, if I sign up, the taxpayers are responsible for $600 of mine and I'm solid middle class.

Exactly the point of my post Germ, if I am healthy and have no use for insurance and I make the financial decision to not purchase insurance. THAT SHOULD BE MY CHOICE!!

100% true. Many of those with pre existing conditions could have bought insurance long ago and chose not to.

His point is that if you get cancer. It becomes part of rising health care cost and higher taxes.

Problem is that now, were paying for everyone, not just the ones that go to the doctor that is uninsured.

Or they lost it because of a job and now cannot get it. Like my friend and his wife, he lost his Job and they could not even buy insurance because she has diabetes.

This is what the unknown is to me, which is going to save money in the long run, I honestly don't know.
