I work for a state government agency. Recently I applied for a new position within the department and did not get the job. I honestly thought I was a sinch for the position so when I found out I did not get it, I asked to see the interview scores. I topped the list of interview scores, but because a minority had applied for the same position and also passed the interview process (did not score as high as me) he was given the job over me because of the departments goal to attempt to hire candidates that are underutilized (minorities, women, diabilities). Fast forward a month and I am in the process of hiring two seasonal positions. One I will filled with a woman who is a perfect fit for the job and was by far and away tops after the interview process. The other position I have a white male candidate who is majoring in the field this job entails, interviewed great and would fit in perfect, but because 3 other women applied for the same position and all meet the minimum qualifications, I am being forced to hire one of them instead.

What are your thoughts on affirmitive action? Personally I think it is the most convoluted stone age idea there is. Why can't I simply hire the best person for the job? If we are all supposed to be treated equal and shouldn't be defined by race, s*x or ability, why then are the minority, female, and disabled candidates given preference over the white male. How state federal or local government cannot see how reverse discrimination is occuring is beyond me. AM I off base?

Are you off base? If you meet the qualifications, have experience and interview the best, wouldn't the state be shooting themselves in the foot by hiring someone else? Until your state government realizes that, the quality of work goes down.

The beauty of today's society. Race, gender, or anything else shouldn't mean **** when it comes to getting a job. Only the individual skill should be the determining factor, IMO.

I have a female friend that applied for a job here didn't get it because they had a better candidate. The better candidate was a person with no experience, but a relative in upper management.

they told Erica a divorcee with 2 kids she was not qualified. Erica eventually did an onsite interview with a company and they hired her. Even when I've applied for jobs even with my qualifications, I was always chosen for remedial work with companies and those chosen as supervisors are complete rocks.

Even now were I work I'm a press operator manger after being demoted from another position. Even at my new level they want me to become a floor manger. NO WAY!

I want the front office. I forgot I'm not experienced enough. Although since this company has been opened there have never been a Black Front Office manager and our current manger want me to teach him how to align a press machine.

I called out today he's on his own.

Affirmative Action gives those minorities a chance that's just as qualified as those that dominate those areas. If you've been left out of a position because of some reason or another.

Do as I do. Keep trying and never give up.

I replied Well sir I come to see why whitetail is so interesting chase.

"Affirmative Action gives those minorities a chance that's just as qualified as those that dominate those areas. If you've been left out of a position because of some reason or another."

Affirmative action is a completely unconstitutional law that somehow, someplace, was passed. In fact, Affirmative Action actually violates Title 7 of the 1964 Civil Rights Act which states:

    "
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII), which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion,
    sex, or national origin
    ;
    "

YET we somehow have let this "law" continue and actually think it is ok....UNREAL. Actually it is not unreal, it is just mirrors the changing, crap mindset of many "Americans" today.

Where are the marches in the streets for people like MN who have been F'ed by those types of laws?

Now that MN has been subjected to racism, can he now claim Affirmative Action because he has been caught "below the glass ceiling"?

On my last census I wrote that I was a Native American of European Descent. They sent a census taker to my home who said I could not be Native American because I did not meet the criteria. Since my family has been in America for at least 12 generations, I don't see how they could classify us as anything else. I had a long argument with the census taker and they wrote I refused to answer. If you don't play by their rules, they label you.

Mark, on every job application since college and on my marriage certificate I have checked "other" as my race. When I do so people look at me strangely. I don't care.

You all see it the same way I do.

Our state has has various affirmative action categories based on the type of job it is. Not surpisingly, clerical type positions no longer have an underutilization for women; and therefore, if I was hiring for a clerical position, I wouldn't need to give preference to a female anymore. I questioned if that meant I should now give preference to males instead being we had achieved and surpassed female equaility in the clerical category. The simple answer was "no, it doesnt work that way." It's just so pathetic.

If you ever read the Employment section of a paper on Sundays or look at Employment on the internet look at the end of most jobs....they state "Females and Minorities Encouraged to apply".....to be honest alot of folks I know that are minority actually hate this law....they don't want to be viewed as only getting the job based on their race....

Yup... dumb down the work force to fill quotas. Soon the white male will become the minority and we can start getting jobs again. LOL

there was a case here in wisconsin in which a municipality discrimnated against a few white guys for officer promotions that were given to minorities/women. they successfully sued the city. the city will now probably watch what they do.
It's pretty rampant here in Wi. In Kenosha fire, the white males have to score a 87 to continue on in the process, while minorities/females only have to score a 70. Sad thing is that the avg. citizen isn't aware that they are not getting the best qualifies canidate for their money. It's actually more prominent in cities that rely on federal funding, and are required to meed feds criteria.
