    Guys, I need some help.
One of my best friends is 78 and has been an avid recurve- longbow guy for 60 years.
He can't pull a bow like he has always done and am afaid he may pull the pin.
I need some encouragement from you fellas to get him to at least TRY a compound or crossbow.
I " think" there is a chance if enough of you fellas respond favorably.
His love for bowhunting is huge and I can only pray when I'm 78 I still have the drive he does.
    Help !e out fellas:bhod:

"when we can no longer draw bows, when sinew has shrunk and bone gone brittle, we will hunt in our dreams because hunting is part of our souls."

Tell him that everything the he is and does is defined by his determination. And at 78 years old if he can indulge himself in the passion that he has, then by all means do it..I don't care what weapon he uses. He's a legend in my book

It's time for a crossbow. There is no shame in that especially at his age. Maybe someone could help build him a comfortable blind to hunt out of.

He has no problem sitting in a tree stand. Prefers late season when it's colder. He hunts with a black widow longbow 53# and can't pull it back when he gets cold.

I would have zero issue going to a compound or crossbow to stay in the woods during my favorite season.
If he’s into doing things traditionally, then I bet he would also greatly enjoy a traditional muzzleloader too. It sure hooked me, there’s is tons to learn about them and making your own tools, antler powder measures for example, is half the fun. Not archery I realize, but it would keep him in the woods and many states have late muzzleloader only seasons.

I don't know your friend so his motivation behind hunting I can't speak to. So as a 62 yr old woman with just so many injury issues I'll relay mine to him
The 1 on 1 challenge deer and turkey hunting gives me
Just being out there as the day wakes or goes to bed each hunt
The sounds and movement of life we tend to silence in our daily lifes
Hunting to provide good food for us
To help regulate populations of animals I love to avoid disease and starvation, save human and animal deaths in collisions
Lifes journey has shown us many changes in our bodies. We adapt to continue this journey in a more comfortable manner. From eye wear to shoe wear and all manners of ointments and pills. The foods we eat and amounts. The general activities we do.
I went from recurve to compound . I stayed an instinctive shooter, though I have a wrist release. Just as challenging for me because my shots still require all my other skills to be close for 49#'s
I use my crossbow in the last two weeks and muzzy season because I have shoulder issues. Mines easier due to being compound and scoped, though there are great ones in recurve and open sites. You still have just one shot and it takes skill. Cold has me building more enclosed blinds and adding more safety features to open ones. On stalks, well plopping down next to a tree is way easier than getting back up, so a easy carry folding stool is with me.
I'm sore and I'm tired during season. I can choose to change hunting times and bed times. I can take medication for pain relief. What I can not do is get back the time I could enjoy all the things I mentioned above if I don't adapt to my aging life.

    So same issue
Dr told me this is your body protecting it's core if you start losing core temps it reduces blood flow to extremities. Thus weakening muscles. Try a heated vest. Look into better base layers. Carry a hand gripper or sliced tennis ball to squeeze and keep those muscles active and blood flowing

Maybe it's time to order a new Black widow in 45 lbs pull. Still plenty to hunt with. Sounds like he like the simplicity of traditional gear and it's time to just go down in draw weight. I also think most bowers you can send in your old bow and they will shave down the limbs and refinish to make it lower poundage.

I just broke out my Great Northern Ghost recurve just for the hell of it ans shot a dozen times...still pretty decent with it..it's so addicting. It's always an internal battle this time of year...traditional vs compound... it's just so simple yet, so difficult. thanks to this thread, the battle begins!
