What is the difference (real world), in 65% and 80% ? Is there speed to be gained by that ? I just don't see why a person would want to go back to 65%.

55# draw w/80% let off leaves you holding roughly 11lbs, 65% is around 19lbs. If I can gain extra speed by that, I dont think 8 lbs is going to make or break me.

It is definitely not going to make or break you. You will only gain a few fps switching to 65. 5 years ago there were many western big game states that had a let off regulation of 65 or 70 max. Now most all western states are 80-85 max. The pros of having 85 definitely outweigh the cons.

Actually, (and I've been wrong before), going to 80% let off on your cam will lengthen your draw. Usually only by about 3/8" is all. Since draw length affects speed, 80% should be ever so slightly faster than 65%.

isnt it also true that you cant(morally) enter an animal into pope and young if your bow has more than 65% let off? thats the exact reason my father in law switched from 80% to 65%. its not like they are going to come to your house and inspect your bow, but its one of those honor code things.

    That's interesting.

    4. Effective January 1, 2004, animals taken with bows have nominal percent of let-off greater than 65 percent shall be listed with an asterisk (*) in the Records. It is recognized that variations in draw length and/or draw weight can affect the percent of let-off on compound bows. For these reasons minor variations in let-off are acceptable.

but who wants an asterisk by their entry? stupid asterisk, always coming over uninvited wanting something to eat. actually, right after i wrote that i went over to the pope and young page and read that exact same paragraph. so i guess 80% is a go, oh well. and my father in law's P&Y buck was taken in 1990, so i guess that has something to do with him telling me that too.

That's true. Everyone would forever know your P&Y record as the one with the asterisk next to it.

    I agree with NYArcher!

Plus, as you get older the reduction of 8lbs. can make a noticeable difference, making it easier for us golden era guys if you have to hold at full draw for a while. I personally prefer the higher let-off for this reason. If I should take a P&Y trophy, not likely in my area of the country (NH), the * won't trouble me at all.

It's a personal thing but i enjoy shooting a bow with 65 percent letoff more
but bows are getting hard to find that has 65 and near impossible to find one with less. and the ats keeps getting shorter.

Not the direction i want to go.

Holding less weight has the tendancy for you to torque the bow more and not hold steady on target before and during a shot. That added holding weight helps keep you steady and solid at full draw.
