It just amazes me how adaptable our friend the whitetail is. You can find them in south Texas in the 120 degree heat, or here... where its cold... so... ... cold. Our thermometer read -38 yesterday AM and -35 today. The deer aren't moving much, bedding about 50-100yrds from my neighbor's bird feeders. amazing what these creatures can survive in. I think the wolves are going to have a good winter this year!
With all the snow you guys all have up there In northern Mn I'd say your spot on! My dad lives up In Kelliher and said he figures the wolves too won't be going hungry this winter.:mad1:
It's a good thing our DNR pads their numbers on the deer. Otherwise, they could be too low next year, too low for us to hunt them.
Do you honestly think that the Mn DNR knows what there talking about with deer numbers In different area's? Maybe there close In some of the area's but I know of a few area's they couldn't be farther off on.
I was being sarcastic. It's my dry humor. It's too cold for any other kind of humor. Speaking of cold. How's the weather up there.
Yeh the snow is up to their bellies or even higher in some places. I got some corn last week to try to help my deer to make it through. When you only have 13 acres you can't afford to have any deer dieing off.
Is there any way you can make some trails for them, sounds like they are sitting ducks for those wide-pad wolves. Snowmobile, ATV, Monster Truck. I am getting some corn too, I have a spot only 5 acres.
I went out today and blazed some trails for them with the snowmobile. Glad we dont have wolves here thats for sure....
The deer will follow any beaten path if given a choice (snowshoe, snowmobile, driveway, etc...). But, I wouldn't trade having wolves up here for anything. Not only do they help keep a healthier herd, but there's something about hearing them howl throughout the year that is just plain awesome! Besides, in this part of MN wolves have always been here, whitetails have not. They only moved in after the logging started. Before that it was just moose and caribou, no whitetail (I wish that they'd reintroduce the caribou, but I'm not sure how they'd fair in these thick young forests).
