With the amount of rain this spring and cooler temperatures so far for the month of May how will this effect this falls crop here in the upper midwest? What are the ideal weather conditions to have a bumber crop? Thanks, T
Rain is a big factor for good acorn crop,I go out in the spring and put tree grow spikes around my fav trees i buy from local farm store 4-5 of them around the drip circle
Acorns will probally drop early this year , in piles , thats when Vanilla Extract works great for a couriosity scent in early season .
I think here in southern Missouri we are going to have 2 years in a row with a huge crop, last year was the most I've seen and with the conditions we've been having it will be a repeat of last year. As long as we don't get anymore F5 Tornados lol.
The bumper crop last year in the midwest was a combination of several things. We had great weather for the acorns and the year before there was a dismal crop - hence "stored energy". Oaks only produce bumper crops ever 3 -5 years. It's not predictable what years will be bumper years. Oaks have flowers similar to fruit trees. Cold and rainy weather, as well as a late frost is not good for fruit trees or oaks. White oak flowers take 3 months to develop into mature acorns, while red oak take 15 months to develop. Bad weather will cause white oaks to have a poor crop this year and red oaks to have a small crop next year. There is much more to this. The quick answer is, we'll probably have a small acorn crop this year - because of last year's bumper crop and this years weather.
Thanks Todd!! Actually in my neck of the woods in South Eastern, Wi last year seem to be a poor crop. The prior year had a very good crop and it showed with the number of deer sightings I had.
