Question for the HVAC guys. We just moved into a rental house this last February. It does have central air but the upstairs remains pretty warm unless we really crank down the A/C. To really get it comfy upstairs we have to set the A/c at about 65. I want to get a window unit to help compliment the regular a/c and get it cooled upstairs. I will probably only really run it in the late evening and at night. (The upstairs is just a big bedroom.). Its just over 300 sq feet which if you look at a chart equates to around a 8000 BTU unit. Since I am using it a compliment to a central A/C do you think I could get by with a smaller 5 or 6000 BTU unit?

This answer comes from my husband. He points out that warm air rises and cool air falls. So natuarlly the upstairs will be warmer. He suggests you set the fan to run constantly instead of just when the pump comes on. This should move the cool air upstairs. Yes, it will cost more to run the fan all the time, but not as much as a second air conditioner. He suggests you try it. If it doesn't work, you can always go to plan B.

Plus running your furnace fan 24/7 is a good idea in general for air circulation, unless your have an air exchanger, then it isn't necessary.

The fan always running really helps but as for the a/c I would get the bigger unit. It wont cost a ton more and you don't have to run it full blast but if the main a/c goes out or you have an extremely hot summer you will wish you had it. And remember you will take it with you since your renting and can always sell it for more in the future if you don't need it at your next home.
