Yes, I don't believe it's our place to decide who lives and who dies. Plus, I'm the seventh son in my family of 8 so if abortion was around back then like it is now I'm sure I wouldn't be here
I'm not a fan of them either. I know some couples can't have their own children any other way, but I can't get my head around killing the ones that don't get implanted.
It seems we're all on the same page here. My wife and I just started trying to conceive...I mean we're in the early stages of this thing. It took several arguments for us to get to this point. If she had it her way, we would have had a couple by now. She's almost 28 and I'm 27...the clock is ticking. Honestly the thought of having a kid is frightening to me. So many things that can go wrong. One thing her and I disagree upon is if the child tests positive for down syndrome in one of those early screening tests...what is to be done? I can say I don't think I'd want to proceed. She would though. That is a game changer for me. First, what kind of life would this child have? Constantly ridiculed by others, restrained by his/her physical/mental limitations, etc. And for selfish reasons, it would be a life long commitment on our part. Again....my opinion may change if ever faced with this situation. Its just something else that scares the hell out of me.
That is an option and one I admittedly did not think of. I'm sure there are quite a few parents that change their minds once the baby is born....they decide to keep it instead of putting him/her up for adoption.
Downs Syndrome kids are some of the sweetest, most rewarding people that walk this earth .... o work with the disabled .... they have every right to life as you or I do .... besides, there have been many cases doctors have misdiagnosed this in the womb .... as well as the danger to the mom ... remember, they are constantly worried about litigation ....
A fantastic and happy one that you get to provide. (the alternative is you killing him/her) Not with your good parenting. The good life will outweigh occasional negatives. That might be the rub and yes selfish. Could you kill the baby a week into its life once you knew it was a downs baby? If not how could you kill the same baby prior to birth if of the reason is that it would be a big commitment?? My wife an I have worked with developmentally disabled kids for a long time. She made a career out of it. They are regular people that just need more love.
My wife was adopted. While she does not know her birth mother, she does know she was a messed up 16 year old kid faced with giving birth to twins. She delivered and both were adopted by my inlaws. She was not aborted and has gone onto do some amazing things with kids and even went to work of the entity that facilitated her adoption. Then she ended up with the ultimate prize of marrying me. She is a winner all the way around.
Not going to actually comment much on the topic of Abortion, (though I am very Pro-Life) but 1 thing I find to be so confusing is how people can and are vegetarians because they don't like the treatment of animals in slaughter houses/farms etc..., but on the other hand be for Abortion straight across the board....I love animals as much as the next guy..but realize they have their rightful place...an animal doesn't even compare to a Human life imho !!!!!! just my 2cents though!!!!! and sorry for getting off track with my rant/opinion
RC & Tony...you make good points and nothing I can really disagree with. I also believe it is easier for someone to have such beliefs if never faced with that particular situation. On the other hand, I don't know what my beliefs/opinion would be if God forbid, ever faced with that situation myself. The funny thing...if I could have just told my wife what I told you all in 30 minutes, I would have prevented a lot of headaches on my part.
It’s not necessarily in the constitution per se. In Griswold v. Conn, a case about whether married people had the right to buy rubbers, the court stated that certain privacy rights are inherent in the constitution, but not specifically mentioned. These rights exists in the “penumbra of the constitution,” or the vibe of the constitution. The right to use contraceptives and the right to have an abortion are among those. Roe v. Wade legalized it, but Planned Parenthood v. Casey defined the acceptable terms and made it clear that states don’t have to fund them.
Every time I hear or see this topic come up I'm reminded of a song I heard when I was a lot younger. The name of the song is "What was I supposed to be." Here are the lyrics: When Jesus walked upon the earth on the shores of Gallilee he'd say to his disciples “Let the little children come to me.” I wonder if up in Heaven, do you suppose we’ll see little children asking “What was I supposed to be.” “What was I supposed to be? What were by eyes supposed to see? Why did I taste of death before I even drew a breath or laid my head upon Mother’s breast to sleep. Oh Jesus, what was I supposed to be? Was I to be a prophet used in the ministry? A doctor who would find a cure for some terrible disease? Even if I’d been born imperfect why couldn’t my parents see that I’d have been made perfect when you came back for me? Oh Jesus, what was I supposed to be?” Here's a link to the version that I know: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HC886u3ijFg
We downsized from the Castle long ago. We are empty nesters and even the current Crabtree Compound is getting a bit to big.
So you are against it? As in the mom making the decision for the baby or you are for it as in legislating it so the woman can choose .... wait, that sounds like the same thing ...
Actually, it's funny PT posted this today. Ruraliowegian spoke of this on his blog early this morning.
